Preview of intellectual property chapter

I hope you're having a good spring break.

This past weekend, I was interviewed for a news report on News 8 Austin, the 24-hour cable news channel on Time Warner Cable.

The piece was about how the Academy Awards organizers told the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin that they couldn't host an Oscars night watch party this year -- something the Drafthouse had done for the past 10 years without complaint.

What was the problem? The short answer is because of copyright and trademark law. Check out the news story and the video for a more complete answer.

Click here to read the news story and find a link to the video.

If you'd like, you can comment on my performance in the comments section.

Enjoy.

Great job. I was disappointed though, you didn't say, "what would be the best argument for Alamo Draft House?"

Since when are professors legitimate sources? I hope they fact-checked...

haha, just kidding! I interned for them! Congrats on your spreading fame!

And I'm shocked that the Oscars are only NOW enforcing this...kinda weird that it took them 10 years.

I understand where the Oscars are coming from.. but I love traditions and since this has carried on for 10 years, I hope Alamo Drafthouse can get the party up and running for next year.

So I was watching CNN today and apparently Oprah is being sued for defamation. Lawyers were on the show discussing the legal and libel issues of the case. They talked about everything we've been discussing in class about the difference between a public figure and private person and actual malice. I was impressed with myself because I knew the answers to all the questions the interviewer was asking the “expert” panel…just thought I'd let you know.

There are so many professors here at Texas State that a local celebs like you!

I love my school! Who needs UT?

Good job in the interview, you are a good representation of our SJMC professors.

I thought this was an interesting story because of how long the Alamo Drafthouse has done this event with the Oscars. But I do see the side of the Oscar people of how the Drafthouse is making money off of something that "isn't theirs."

I don't think they should have broke tradition now. If no one was harmed and it didn't take away from the Oscar's, there's no harm in letting it go on as it is.

I remember my parents telling me they saw you on the news. How exciting! You did a fabulous job. Where did they interview you-- here or in Austin? How did they know to contact you as an expert on the situation?

Although I would have enjoyed watching the Oscars at the Drafthouse, the Oscars had every right to intervene. I hope the two parties will come to some kind of agreement, so that this fun tradition can continue.

It's great to see our school and professors get so much spotlight here lately. TAKE THAT UT!

I agree that the Oscars have a right to censor this event. However, it's a shame that they are. I have never attended this event at the Drafthouse, but it sure seems fun.

I also hope that the Drafthouse and the awards show can agree on something to make the event work once again.

P.S.
I am also proud that a Texas State Professor was asked to be interviewed. Great Job Professor Martinez.

It has taken me awhile to comment on this, but I saw you're interview live when it aired in Austin. I was excited to see my professor on television commenting on something so popular as The Academy Awards. I thought you did a great job and spoke very well and with confidence. Very proud and great publicity for Texas State!
