Welcome, Fall 2018 Classes!

Welcome to my Media Law blog. I use this blog as a teaching tool that allows me to comment on current events and topics related to media law. It also allows you to participate in discussions involving media law topics.

As the name of the blog suggests, I want you to use this forum to speak freely about the topics that we will discuss in my spring classes.

We will discuss some controversial topics -- and often, we may not agree. You may not agree with me, or you may not agree with your classmates.

But this is a forum of expression, so you have the right to express your opinion. My opinion is not correct just because I'm the instructor. You should feel free to disagree with me.

Think about this as the First Amendment in practice.

A few ground rules, please. Some of our discussions may become heated. While you have the right to express your opinion, I urge you to be considerate of others, especially those with whom you disagree. Avoid attacking or belittling someone just because you disagree with his or her opinion. And, I suggest you double check your comment for grammar, clarity and sensitivity before you post.

With your comment, please include your first name, initial of your last name and your class (11 a.m. class, 2 p.m. class, or online class). I need this information to keep track of your comments for participation points.

You can get an idea of how I used this blog in past semesters, though you are not responsible for reading or commenting on previous blog entries.

Now, let's start with something light.

Share with us a favorite book, movie, TV show, song, etc., that is related to law, then tell us why it's your favorite and include a brief summary of the work.

I'll go first. In past semesters, the movie I would call my favorite was  "Twelve Angry Men" -- the original with Henry Fonda. But in 2012, I saw Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and was thoroughly impressed. The movie recounts President Lincoln's effort to encourage Congress to pass the Thirteen Amendment, which abolished slavery. A movie about passing a constitutional amendment? How perfect for a media law prof!

I look forward to reading your comments.

My name is Bayley B. I am in the 11 am class. My favorite TV show relating to law is Harlots. While it is set in the 1760s, the characters in the show are seen constantly fighting to change unjust laws that disregard women and barely consider them human. They fight for laws to be overturned or amended when the justice they desire is not served.

Hi, I'm Blade B. from the 2pm class. My favorite movie/book would have to be "To Kill A Mockingbird". It depicts the dark time in United States history that the color of your skin determined your judgment. What strikes my attention is that brought to light that not everyone thought that way and that Atticus Finch a white man. Stood up for his client Tom Robinson no matter what and race did not affect Atticus judgment on Robinson.

My name is Nicole F. and I am in the 2pm class. My favorite TV show relating to law is either Law and Order: SVU or NCIS, the original, not any of the spinoffs. SVU focuses on special victim cases such as rape or crimes relating to children. It's hard to watch 90% of the time but you can't help but keep watching. NCIS brings to the table such a wide variety of backgrounds for their characters that I have loved for years.

Hello, this is Stephanie H. and I am in your 11 a.m. class. My favorite TV show relating to law has to be "Law and Order: SVU" this is the first thing that popped into my head when you asked the question. I would watch this show very often when I was growing up which is a show about catching criminals usually murderers that had some sort of sexual aspect and also involved kids. These types of shows always intrigue me probably because at least its good to know that people do not get away with these things and come to justice in the end.

Any Advertising or PR majors are behooved to watch AMC's "Mad Men." While not directly related to law, this show continuously calls into question the ethics of advertising. Through its characters, the show illustrates the idea of a moral "middle ground," with some likeable characters making questionable life choices -- and vice versa. The show asks the question, what kinds of choices are morally acceptable? What choices can you move forward from?

As someone who doesn't find enjoyment in the practice of law, I do find a lot of enjoyment in shows that use satire when portraying the practice of law. One of my very favorite shows - I actually just started watching again - is Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. It's a show that aired from 2000 to 2007 on Adult Swim, and it often used popular cartoon characters over the years as subjects in different law cases, each of which would be solved in a humorous and often ridiculous manner by Harvey Birdman. It covered situations such as marijuana convictions, gun control, and sexism, and was IN NO MEANS an accurate portrayal of a courtroom. I just loved it because it was entertaining while still touching on sensitive subjects.

A intriguing show for me was, "TURN," an AMC original (now on Netflix). It's based throughout the revolutionary war. This show did a great job of helping the viewer understand why the colonies rebelled against Great Britain, as well as showing an inside look at how both sides ran their militaries. Most of the show deals with spies and conspiracies. It showed how both sides dealt with spies, conspiracy in a court of law and also gave you a sense of how there wasn't freedom of speech or press.

Hello!
My name is Jade Simon, I'm in your online class. I have two favorites when it comes to entertainment related to law, the first is the NPR Politics podcast and the second is NPR's Embedded podcast. Both are highly entertaining for me, especially now when the integrity and ethics of journalism have come under such scrutiny. NPR Politics podcast is great because it's a weekly round-up of the latest news on the week, and they often bring in professionals to touch on the legality of a lot of what is going on in the world today. Embedded is also a favorite for a similar reason. They had an entire series of podcasts dedicated to police videos and the examination of police brutality in high profile incidents. They brought in professionals to assess the situation, determine if the actions of the officer/victim were legal, and with an emotional appeal. I loved the series! NPR puts out a lot of amazing podcasts.

My favorite documentary is "Paradise Lost: Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills", an HBO documentary. It's about the trials of the West Memphis Three, who are three boys from the nearby high school who were rumored to worship Satan because they listened to Metallica. The boys were accused of murder and sexual mutilation of three young boys as part of a satanic ritual in West Memphis, Arkansas. I got hooked on this series of documentaries and enjoyed them because it follows the three boys throughout their adulthood. It's a great insight into how the media can help or hurt a trial, as well as how important it is to know one's own rights.

My favorite TV show (That's related to law) is DareDevil on Netflix. It's connected to law because the Main character Matt Murdock AKA: DareDevil, is an Attorney by day and superhero by night. Whichever name he goes by either his given name or his super hero name he takes justice into his hands and fights for what's right and just.

One of my favorite TV shows at the moment is Peter Nowalk’s How to Get Away with Murder. I was not only in awe of Viola Davis’ brilliant and remarkable acting, but the overall execution of the series and its element of surprise was enough to get me hooked (like other HTGAWM fans, I, too, am looking forward to season 5). The show highlights a wide array of issues within the legal field; from minor criminal offenses to justice-oriented cases, the show covers topics relevant to today’s social and political climate, all while its characters learn to deal with the consequences of their actions.

Here’s to a great semester!

Hi, I'm Erin O. and I'm in the 2 p.m. class. I am a huge fan of YouTube videos and podcasts that discuss murder cases and the legal proceedings that take place during the investigations. I watch/listen to a bunch of different ones, but one of my favorite ones has to be the "Serial" podcast. The first season of the podcast was about a man named Adnan Syed, who is currently sitting in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend back in the 90's. A journalist investigated the case, the police work done before the trial and the trial itself. It was very interesting to learn about the evidence and hear the criticisms from lawyers and journalists today about the work done back then. The end of the season leaves you wondering if Adnan is guilty at all. It's interesting, but frustrating at the same time.

Hi, I'm Sarah H. and I'm in the 11 a.m. class. I recently started watching Narcos and really enjoyed it. It is very interesting to watch because it gives you an idea of what happened from the 1970s to 1990s. The show highlights how much involvement the United States had in the taking down of the drug cartel and Pablo Escobar. Though everything isn't 100% accurate, it still gives you an idea about the laws and the work they had to do to try and take all of it down

My name is Emily M and I am in the 2 p.m. class. My favorite TV show relating to law is definitely Law & Order SVU. I still love to watch this show for the mystery and the suspense that entails. The capturing of the bad guys and bringing them to justice and the drama behind the scenes of the investigation has always intrigued me. I really love watching this show even after all these years it has been on television.

Hey there! My name is Caroline J. and I am in your 2 pm class. I usually like to start each semester with a new TV to associate with a particular time in my life. I just started watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine with Andy Samberg on Monday. As a long time fan of Samburg, it is no surprise that I instantly liked the show. It follows the lives of New York City police officers and specifically the detectives. The show not only shows how the cases are solved, but also the dynamic between all the characters and their relationships with each other.

Carissa Rose said...

Hello! My name is Carissa R. from the 2 p.m. class. My favorite show relating to law (and just a favorite show in general) is Brooklyn 99, a show about the lives and jobs of detectives in the 99th precinct. Even though it's mostly about the characters, it still shows a large amount of their police work.

Hi there! My name is Blair Bardwell, and I am in the 11 a.m. class. Relating to law, my favorite TV show would be Law & Order SVU. The show revolves around a set of New York detectives who investigate sex crimes. Each case goes through a series of trials and tribulations in dealing with attorneys, detectives, the statue of limitations and more. Not only do I love this show, but many others do as well (considering the several years it has been on television). Law & Order SVU depicts an enticing story line that follows the work and personal lives of each detective and their cases.

Hello! My name is Maci Nelson and I am in the online class. My favorite show relating to law is How to Get Away with Murder. For those of you who have not seen this series, the show follows a criminal defense attorney/professor of defense law who selects five of her students to work alongside her and a couple of her employees at her firm. The students are exposed to a whole host of legal cases and this show deals with a lot of the problems in our society today.

Hello! I am Ryan H I’m in the 2 pm class. My favorite TV show related to law is “Bull”. The show is about a organization that basically serves as defense attorneys. They try to beat the system and help out the innocent by manipulating the jury. It’s my favorite because I really enjoy the concept in how hey go about winning over the jury.

Hi! My name is Kayla D., and I'm in the 2pm class. My favorite tv show related to law is 'White Collar.' It ended a couple of years ago, but it was about a convicted art thief who partnered with the FBI to stop art heists and track down art smugglers and forgeries. I loved the dynamic between the characters on the show and I thought it was really interesting to learn about art crimes through the show.

Hello I'm Brady O. in the 11am class. The best show I've watched about law has to be "O.J. Vs. The People." I enjoyed watching how O.J Simpsons team of attorneys used race relations during that time in America to change the perception the jury had on Simpson.

Hello I'm Dylan B from the 2pm class. My favorite show related to law is Nobody Speak: Trials of the free press. It is a Netflix documentary which follows the legal proceedings between Gawker Media and Hulk Hogan. It's an interesting piece because of its focus on how outside influences can effect a court decision.

hey, I'm Brandon F in the 11am class. My favorite show about law is Law Abiding Citizen. This is a movie about a man who's family was murdered. When a prosecutor cuts a deal with the murderer, the main character, played by Gerard Butler, demands the prosecutor correct the system that let his family's killer go or reek the havoc that comes.

Hi! I’m Ryan A. from the 11am class. My favorite song at the moment relating to an extent of law is Chained to the Rhythm by Katy Perry. It’s from her 2017 album Witness and peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. It’s about societal awareness not only in politics but in everyday life. It’s saying how we as a society tend to be oblivious to what’s going on in our government and being accustomed to an every day strict routine. She uses the term “rose colored glasses” as a way to describe how we see what we want to see when things are bad. It explores the idea that we are programmed to not questions are superiors.

Alisha Ebrahimji said...

Alisha E., online class. Is it bad to say I really enjoy listening to the Serial podcast. I know podcast wasn't listed on here but I've learned more than I expected to on the legal process from that series. Though it's probably not your typical "law" program, it has so many elements of the justice system and how it works. I love practical shows, podcasts and movies and this one takes the cake for me. I've listened to it twice when it first came out and again during a cross-country move. It combines my two favorite things: true crime and law. It's a 12-episode series with a producer telling the story of the killing, investigation and trial of one man's high school girlfriend. I continuously follow the updates on the case and am so curious on what's to come now that Adnan Syed, the main character could be getting a new trial on all charges -- it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out. If you haven't had a chance to check this one out, do yourself a favor and download it now! It was downloaded more than 175 million times according to the NY Times and even won a Peabody Awards.

My name is Christina Castro and I am apart of your 11 A.M. Class. One of my favorite shows that include Law in it is "How to Get Away with Murder". This show is extremely suspenseful taking place mostly in a courtroom. It's about a brilliant professor that twists and turns the law at hand because of how much knowledge she has on it! She and her colleagues (a.k.a her students) literally get away with murder. I highly recommended this show.

My favorite movie that involves law (and one of my favorites in general) is Legally Blonde! In the movie Elle Woods is dumped by her boyfriend for being too dumb and not serious enough. So, she follows him to Harvard law school to prove that she isn't a stereotypical blonde. She eventually gets put on a prosecution team and is able to solve a murder case during a cross-examination . She goes on to graduate from Harvard with a law degree. I enjoy this movie because it puts an entertaining spin on law, while also showing how someone who was doubted by everyone and believed to be incapable could prove them all wrong.

My name is Hannah S. and I am in your 2 pm class. My favorite song that involves the law is called Lay Me Down by the Dirty Heads and it's about a couple on the run from the law trying to find a place to settle down and start a new life. It's my favorite song because of the poetic type of lyrics and the fact that it's a new version of Bonnie and Clyde's love story told through music.

My favorite show in relation to the practice of law would be, Robert and Michelle King's "The Good Wife," wherein Alicia Florrick wife to Peter Florrick, is forced to come out of retirement after 13 years and return to her profession as a litigator to support her family following her husbands professional downfall. This series follows various cases and dramatizes the process of law and is extremely entertaining.

My name is Ashley L. and I am in the 2pm class. My favorite movie that is related to law is Legally Blonde. In the movie, Elle Woods is viewed as rich, stuck up and air-headed. She studies intensely to get accepted into Harvard Law to prove she is more than that. In the hopes to win back her boyfriend, Elle defies the odds and gets accepted. Elle proved she had more substance to her than a preppy sorority girl. I like this movie because Elle utilizes the knowledge she has gained from law school with the rich, spoiled girl inside of her to win her court case.

Hi, I'm Kayla H from the 2pm class. One of my favorite tv shows that I grew up watching is Law&Order SVU. The intensity of this show has made me more aware of real-life cases that can happen to anybody along with teaching me more about the justice system. This show is centered around sexual assault victims and their stories. Although many episodes are disturbing and hard to watch I find it better to be aware of real-life situations.

My name is Gisselle S. and I am a student in your 2pm class. My favorite show relating to law would be The Sinner (It's on netflix). It's about a mother named Cora who kills this man on the lake out of no where, she has no memory of why she committed the crime and claims to not remember her motive. Stating to authorities that there is no motive and she no relationship to the man. She doesn't remember her motive while she stabs him in front of many witnesses. The cops show up to the scene and she turns herself in knowing what she has done. The cops question her motive and get detectives on the case. She claims that she has no idea why she fatally stabbed him, but only one detective doesn't buy the story. Throughout the show Detective Harry decides to keep the case open while detective leroy wants to close it because he thinks it's a done deal and it was just a random kill. As evidence and flashbacks pour out to help this girl figure out why she committed murder. Detective Harry keeps the case open to get more and more answers as to why Cora committed murder. Flashbacks and evidence appear throughout the show to showcase why she committed murder. Great show starring Jessica Biel, a must watch.

Hey everyone, I'm Anthony from the 11 a.m. class. My favorite TV show that pertains to law would have to be the mini-series aired by FX called "The People vs O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story". I've always been drawn to this particular case and just intrigued by how much of an impact it left on society and pop culture. Not to mention, the acting in this series was phenomenal, which was to be expected with this all-star cast. I won't get into my personal thoughts on the decision, but it just astounds me how so many question marks about the specifics still linger to this day. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't watched it.

My name is Addison McKissack and I am from the 11 am class! I would have to say that my favorite book regarding the law would have to be "To Kill a Mockingbird". The story follows Scout Finch, a young girl living in Macomb, Alabama and her family. The second half of the story revolves around her father's, Atticus Finch, court case where he is defending a man of color who was wrongfully accused of assault. It was one of the first books that I read for school that really impacted me, and has been one of my favorites for the past 5 years.

My favorite law-related work is a game called "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney." While it may not be entirely accurate in the sense of how a legal trial happens, the aspects of collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and arguing in court were all enthralling! It made me interested in the real process and become more knowledgeable in the subject.

Hi, I am Gabriela S from your 11 am class! My favorite TV show relating to the law as of right now would be How To Get Away With Murder. From the first episode I was instantly hooked. I enjoy that it explores a variety of cases each with different levels of severity. I also think it shows how the justice system can be corrupt and abusive of its power. The show demonstrates the difficult work of the courts and lawyers, and how it isn't necessarily about the truth its about who has the best case.

It focuses on the main conflict of Olivia Pope and the President, Fitzgerald Grant. Olivia has her problems and legally fixes them while helping others with her team of gladiators. I am in the 11 am class! My favorite movie is actually a fairly recent movie, Hidden Figures. Hidden figures is literally the best, most female empowering movie I have ever seen. This movie is about three black women who work for NASA and the obstacles they have to go through in order to keep their jobs during the 1930s. Segregation was very severe during this time so getting any amount of respect in this time period was extremely difficult; especially for women. This movie showcases the appreciation that these women should have deserved for being as smart as they were. This movie deals heavily with the law and how laws about segregation were so enforced.

My favorite TV show relating to law is Bones. It aired on Fox for 12 seasons and was my favorite show in high school. I like it because of the strong female characters and the fake "made for TV" forensic science. FBI Special Agent Booth and Dr. Brennan (AKA Bones) are a dynamic duo who solve cases for the FBI. With Dr. Brennan's unmatched forensic anthropology skills, Agent Booth's ex-sniper skills, and a skilled team of scientists they caught killers from 2005 to 2017.

Hi, my name is Brianna R and I'm in your 2pm class. I would have to say my favorite media in this category would be the true crime videos I watch on Youtube. I follow a certain youtuber who lays out the stories with all available media and a timeline. You can really see the system trying to work with all available resources available at the time (past or current).

Hi, I'm Che Salgado, in your 2 PM class.
What came to mind immediately when I saw the prompt was "Highway Patrolman" by Bruce Springsteen. To summarize, the narrator is the titular highway patrolman with a troublemaking brother. Said brother kills a man and, while giving chase the narrator sees his brother is about to cross the border into Canada, out of his jurisdiction. So he pulls over because "sometimes when it's your brother you look the other way" and "man turns his back on his family, he just ain't no good."
Anyway, I just think it's a good song about the moral ambiguity that arises when personal interest, age-old values, and something you could dub the "human element" conflict with the law.

Hi, I’m Autumn W. in the 11 a.m. class. My favorite tv shows that has to do with law is Law & Order SVU & Better Call Saul. SVU is a drama & can over exaggerate on how cases are handled but it’s pretty educational on the fact that it gives a little information on what my rights are as a suspect of a crime & how the protects me if I am a victim of crime. Better Call Saul is a tv show that is an extension from another show called Breaking Bad. Saul is a pro-bono criminal attorney who is having financial issues & keeps track of highly publicized cases and tries to be part of the counsel to get more recognition as a lawyer and then hopefully more clients for himself. Saul defends “the criminal,” in all his cases and it’s interesting how he finds creative ways to prove his clients innocence. Even if they might not be fully innocent, Saul finds way to make sure the procecutors doesn’t find anything that can prove the defendant is guilty.

My favorite TV show about law is Forensic Files. It's a true crime show on HLN that takes you through a real crime, usually murder, step by step and shows how law enforcement catch criminals using forensic technology. It also shows how defense lawyers can sometimes use forensics to free innocent people.

The series takes viewers through "the most realistic" version of what really happened while dramatizing this controversial and historic crime case.

My current favorite book is called, "The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F&$*" by Mark Manson. The book does not teach you how to disregard all aspects of life. It teaches you to prioritize your problems, values, etc. Being able to be correctly assertive with yourself, as well as avoiding possible loopholes in the process, directly correlates to the aspect of law.

Looking forward to get to know all of you.

Hello my name is Breanna M. and I'm in your Tuesday/Thursday 11 am class. Right now I am binge watching all 19 seasons of Law and Order: SVU. This show is mostly centered around sexual assault, rape, and pedophile cases. It not only follows a group of detectives that solve the case, but it also follows through to show the court system. The Assistant District Attorney tries the criminals in court, and shows how the system works. This show portrays justice being shown, but it also depicts how the courts can be unfair or corrupt at times. I'm super excited to take this class!

My name is Reagan T. and I am in your TTh 2 p.m. class. My favorite movie relating to law is The Rainmaker, starring Matt Damon. It's honestly my favorite, because I haven't seen many movies or television shows that are related to law, since it's not exactly my favorite type of thing to touch upon or watch, for that matter. The Rainmaker is about an underdog lawyer who takes on a fraudulent insurance company, and many other occurrences happen throughout the movie that really tests Damon's ability and character as a lawyer.

Hi, my name is Ali M. and I am in the 2 p.m. class. This might be a stretch as far as law, but my favorite book I can think of relating to law is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I actually just read it for the first time in the spring (I know, weird that I didn't have to read it in high school). But the book is about the trial of Tom Robinson, an innocent black man, who is being tried for sexually assaulting a white woman. The book is from the perspective of a six-year-old girl called Scout, and covers a lot more than just the case. However, the trial is one of the central aspects of the book, and the chapter(s) when the trial takes place are quite intriguing. The closing remarks from Atticus Finch, the lawyer defending Robinson, are extremely captivating in the way he calls the jury to honor the law and what is right based on the information presented to them, rather than the color of Robinson's skin.

Hi, I'm Maddie D. in the 2pm class. One of my favorite shows is Broadchurch. It is a British tv show that deals with the murder of a young boy in a small town and the investigators' attempts to capture the killer and bring him to justice. I like it because it shows how England's criminal justice and law system works, which I find very interesting. Not only is it incredibly emotional, but it also portrays the trial in a very realistic way.

My name is Dominique H. and I am in the online class. My favorite movie that is pertaining to the law would have to be the documentary "I Am Not Your Negro" directed by Raoul Peck, in which is based off of James Baldwin's unfinished manuscript "Remember this House". This documentary covers civil rights in the United States with many civil rights leaders. This documentary lists the many laws in which African Americans had to endure before, during, and after the civil rights movement. Not only that, but it also touches basis with the social outcome of every law that was passed. This documentary will not bore you with the commentary, narration, personal memoirs, and overall cinematic usage to deliver a message that shouldn't be forgotten in history.

It starts out about a woman who is just spending a casual day at the beach with her family and all of a sudden walks up to man there and brutally stabs him to death. The story continues to discover why she would have done a thing like this and if they find the reason, is it lawfully permissible to let her off the hook for murder.

Hi there, I am Blake Bouffard and I am in the 2:00pm class session. As an individual, I have never really pursued or clinged onto something that relates to law. Whether it be TV show, song, book, podcast etc. I have been relatively uninformed. I feel like the most exciting that consume my life are things more adventurous and spontaneous than law itself. It seems like a dense subject that can be hard to understand and relate with because of vast number of policies, jurisdictions and possible outcomes that come with a case. With this being said, I have always found my self glued to the TV anytime I see a wild case come up on Judge Judy. This might be more on the comedy side of law itself, but I think it is interesting when we, the audience, are able to step into the court room are intrude on the lives of random individuals who are fighting over some pretty silly stuff. Another cool scenario we are able to see is the way that Judge Judy herself comes to a verdict and how concise she is in her deacons making. She is a very black and white individual who never really offers room for leeway, or forgiveness. She gets to the point and continues as she feels just. I think this is an interesting perspective as we see how the constitutional rights and what provide to us as individuals can be played into any circumstance in life.

Hello! My name is Ashley Y. and I am in your 2 p.m. class. Personally I'm not really a fan of crime or law TV shows that are on now, but I do love rewatching Legally Blonde because I'm more of a comedy type of gal. Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, is my favorite because she proves that she's not just a beauty queen; she's also a serious lawyer. With her hard work and determination she makes it into Harvard Law School and is able to work on a real case as an intern for one of her professors.

Hello everyone! I'm Raven Correa, and I'm in the 2 o'clock class. One of my favorite law shows is Law and Order SVU, but i especially loved when Elliot Stabler was on the show. Law and order SVU investigates crimes that deal with a sexual nature. The episode's topics include crimes like rape and sexual assault. The episodes follow the detectives as they investigate the offenses. They also in episodes prosecute the offender and show how the justice system works with these crimes. The show has many different storylines that are captivating and are sometimes based off of real stories.

Hello, My Name is Alexandra P. I am in the T/R 11am section of media law. One of my favorite documentaries concerning media law is Brian Knappenberger's "Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press." The documentary outlines the trial between Terry Bollea, also known as Hulk Hogan and Gawker Media. The First Amendment plays a huge role in the film.

Hello everyone, my name is Christine D. and I am in the T/R 2 p.m. Media Law class. One of my favorite movies that is related to law, and also happens to be one of my favorite comedy movies as well, is My Cousin Vinny. The movie is about two men who are mistakenly accused of a robbery, and one of them hires his cousin Vinny (an inexperienced lawyer) to represent them in court. It's a great, light-hearted and even somewhat inspiring film.

Hello! My name is Kelly M. and I am in the 2 pm class. My favorite TV show regarding law is The Good Wife. It stars an assortment of great actors and actresses but centers on Julianna Margulies’ character Alicia Florrick. Florrick has to come out of retirement as a defense attorney to save her husband from a huge scandal, which of course, she does. In doing this she sheds the doubt that many people had about her as a lawyer and takes on many more cases. It’s a great show with lots of drama and interesting cases.

Hi everyone!

I'm Elizabeth O. and I am in the 2 pm class. Currently one of my favorite TV shows is the Handmaid's Tale which is also based off of a book by Margaret Atwood.
It is about a totalitarian society of the "United States" in which women are treated more as property and fertile women are used to repopulate the world in which birth rates have dropped.
I love/hate it because it constantly has me on edge and because the idea of "law and order" has been thrown out the window in their society.

Donte Jones from T?R 11am class. My favorite show regarding law is boardwalk empire. This show is set in the time of the prohibition in Atlantic city. The true reason why i like this show is because I'm actually from the northeast of the u.s. I'm not much of a drinker now, but i think its a good show for college students to watch because a lot of this demographic is.

I would probably have to say one of my favorite shows involving law would be How to Get Away with Murder. Viola Davis stars as a law professor who gets tangled up into a murder plot with five of her students. There is a long plot over the course of a season, but the show will also have a separate storyline in the episode involving a crime they all have to work on for the law class. It is a drama show with lots of wild twists and turns and it's a show that keeps me guessing! I think they do a good job at using the law as a tool in their storytelling.

Hi! My name is Nicole W. and I am in the 11 a.m. class. I don't watch a lot of TV shows pertaining to law because it is not usually something that strikes my interest. The closest thing to a law related TV show that I watch is called Wynonna Earp. It is about the great-great-granddaughter of Wyatt Earp who has to kill all the reincarnate outlaws that Wyatt had put down. Wynonna Earp is related to law because she has to work together with local and federal law enforcement to hunt down and kill the demons. She has to figure out how to do her job lawfully and without upsetting the federal law enforcement.

My name is Kylie M. and I am in your 11 am class. My favorite show regarding law would have to be "How to Get Away with Murder". It is based around a law professor and five of her students. They work directly with client cases while being tangled in their own legal conflicts. The show includes law in each episode but also has dramatic twists which keeps me tied to the series.

Hi! My name is Josue Reynoza. I am in the 11AM class. My favorite film related to law would be Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. While it does show the history of the Enron corporation, it goes into details their misconduct and the events that led up to one of the biggest corporate scandals in US history. A lot has to do with accounting "errors". but it is interesting to see a big energy powerhouse at the time go completely down by their own misconduct.

Hello, my name is Jason Harlan from the 2 PM class. My favorite song that deals with law is Nirvana's cover of the Leadbelly tune "where did you sleep last night". The song talks about a runaway slave during the era of Jim Crow in the southern United States. Kurt Cobain's vocal delivery helps convey the hopelessness felt at the time by slaves as they attempted to move North away from their captors.

Hello everyone! My name is Adrianna A. And I am in Professor Martinez's 11 a.m. class. I don't really watch a lot of shows or movies pertaining to law, however, I do enjoy watching Legally Blonde. It is one of the few movies where I can watch over and over again and not get tired of it. I find this movie very inspiring to women and humorous because after perky and pretty Elle Woods gets dumped by her boy friend Warner, she gets right back up on her feet and makes something of herself to feel worthy; go to law school. Now, her intentions might be a little wrong at first, but she winds up actually loving law school and creates her own happy ending by getting over Warner, helping with and winning a major case and finding a man who genuinely cares about her.

Hello my name is Cassandra Freitag and I'm from the online class. My favorite movie dealing with law has to be A Few Good Men. It's a dramatic story following a navy lawer (Tom Cruise) who is tasked with defending two Marines that we accused of murder. Nearly every scene is intense and the classic "You can't handle the truth!" line is absolutely killer.

Johnathan G said...

My name is Johnathan G and I am of the 11 AM class. My favorite law-related film is My Cousin Vinny. In the movie, two boys are falsely accused of murder, so they send for a lawyer relative in order to defend them, not knowing that he is only newly-barred... after his fourth attempt. As one would expect, the movie is quite funny, but where it succeeds is in maintaining that humour through the dire proceedings of the trial. The fact that it still delivers a satisfactorily "a-ha" moment of clarity at the conclusion of the trial is just icing on the short, suspiciously Italian cake.

It is about a young mother who randomly stabs a stranger to death on a beach in front of lots of people, not knowing why she committed the crime. Instead of getting sent away to prison she recovers her memories of the awful tragedies leading up to the reasoning for the crime she committed with the help of a sympathetic detective. This show really makes you try to understand and see things in a different point of view.

Hi! My name is Vivian M. and I am in your online class. My favorite tv show related to law would have to be Scandal. I love it because it gives the viewer an insight (fictional) look of what goes down in the Whitehouse and the stressful life of a crisis manager. Not only does it provide some interesting facts about the history of the United States, but it also has story lines that eludes to modern-day issues such as, presidential elections and police brutality. Since there are many scandals on the show, most of the episodes involve the characters facing or fighting the law, which is very intriguing to watch.

Hi, I'm Araceli M. I am in your 11 a.m. TTh class. I have many favorite movies, and shows that deal with the law, for example Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, Law & Order: SVU, Legally Blonde, Lincoln etc. I love SVU because it never shows the same storyline, every episode is different. I especially have a love hate relationship with the episodes that end without giving you a verdict because the creators stated they wanted us to make our own verdict, because each side had a compelling argument they wanted us to decided who was telling the truth, the victim or the perp. Another one that I am completely obsessed with is the Broadway show Hamilton. I have yet to see the show, but I have seen clip and have about every single song memorized. When I first learned about Hamilton, I got so enamored with the show that I researched anything and everything I could about Alexander Hamilton. I loved that the show depicts how he became one of our founding fathers and how he wasn't the most like man, but he did what he needed to to get his bills passed. How when he disagreed with the Articles of Confederation, he, John Jay & James Madison wrote the Federalist Papers. I one day hope to see the show for myself so I can get a better feel about the time and place that it takes place in.

Hi I'm Brencis Lloyd and I'm in your 2-3:30 class.

My favorite book that relates to law is Crime and Punishment. It also happens to be among my favorite books in general. Its about a man in pre-soviet russia who commits a murder and then the rest of the book is his inner war and turmoil over what he has done. What I find most interesting about the book is that you feel empathy for the main character, the murderer, you get to see how he feels and what he does to try and make it right. I've never read or heard of another book such as this, that takes the criminal and makes them human and I find that fascinating. In the end Raskolnikov is not a bad person, yet he has done something very bad, so where does goodness and what is right end and badness and what is wrong start, and are they much more nuanced and much less black and white than most people would say they are. I love the exploration of morality and ethics in this book and I'm finding new parts to it every time i've re-read it (which is 7 times).

Hi, I'm Sam D. from the 2pm class. My favorite show related to law is Netflix's "Orange is the New Black," which tells the stories of women in prison, and how they ended up there. The show covers topics like law, racial discrimination, injustices in the American court system, inequality, corporate interests trumping human rights, mental health, seixsm, LGBTQ rights, and much more. This show is one of my favorites because, while a lot of it is super funny and entertaining, it also offers what I think is really constructive commentary on many issues in the U.S. that need more attention. I started watching OITNB when it came out when I was 17, and it opened the door to my learning about injustices I'd never been exposed to before, growing up in white middle class America. Now a 22 year old adult who's nearly through college and has a much better grasp on issues like the ones mentioned above, I'm so happy that certain people, classes, situations, and even shows like OITNB helped me gain a better understanding of what society in the U.S. is really like, and which areas need our utmost attention and action.

Hi, I'm Tiffany G. from online class. One of my favorite law movies is the recent Marshall movie. Chadwick Boseman plays the young NAACP lawyer Marshall Thurgood. The movie shows Thurgood’s life before his most famous cases i.e., Shelley v. Kraemer and Brown v. Board of Education. In the movie, Thurgood defends an African-American man accused of raping a white married socialite woman. I like this movie because I respect Thurgood’s perseverance and undaunted conviction in the fight for equal rights for blacks. This is depicted by Thurgood’s willingness to travel and take case after case knowing that his failure would mean a violent death for his clients.

As an up and coming "criminal" lawyer, his unorthodox approach to law is very interesting.

My name is Brad C. One of my favorite movies about law is "Battle for Chile." It is a documentary shot on the ground in Chile leading up to and during the coup against Salvador Allende by the military under leadership of General Pinochet and the CIA. I appreciate it because it throws into contention the question of the fundamental source of the law as a repressive mechanism. The opposition against Allende made much ballyhoo about "legal" and "constitutional" means of struggle until the working class conquered the state under those conditions. Then it broke with this "legalism" in brutally decisive way when it became clear they had lost unilateral control over the machinery of the state. It's a fundamental mistake to ever assume the law is a neutral instrument that exists independently of the historical conditions out of which it grows and or the class dynamics that underpin it.

Hi! My name is Juliana J. and I am in the 11am class. My favorite show relating to law is a documentary called “I am a Killer.” The documentary shows several accounts of prisoners convicted of capital murder that have been sentenced to death. These prisoners recount their side of the crime committed and their experience on death row while awaiting their execution date. The lawyers involved share their personal thoughts on these cases as well as their thoughts on the United States justice system. I found this documentary incredibly interesting because it humanized death row prisoners as well as the lawyers representing them.

My name is Bailey G. and I am in the 11 a.m. class. My favorite tv show in relations to the law is the Hulu Original "Handmaid's Tale". This is a show that is set in Future America and The Colonies. The government is now a religion. They call themselves a "Brotherhood" which in laments terms is equivalent to being the government. They believe in biblical rulings and biblical laws. Their main target is the oppression of women and educational rights. In this tv series, Men are absolute power and The governors have handmaid's who are given the only job; to bear children for their family. They set laws that prohibit woman from reading and writing or have any privacy or sexual desires. If they are to be caught in these acts they are sentenced by the governors to either have a hand removed, an eye or ear cut out or ultimately be hung on a wall. This government is absolute to their society and deal with many injustices. Their only court is the supreme court, this is where people can come before the law and either make suggestions to altering laws or rulings.

My name is Jorge H, from the 2pm class. I can't say I have a favorite movie/tv show that is related to law, but I did recently watch the mini series "The Night Of", which is about a Pakistani-american college student who is accused of murdering a girl in her apartment. You're with the main character from the beginning, from the moment he sneaks out of his parents house to go to a party, to when a he wakes up in a random strangers home only to find her dead in her living room. It's a little scary honestly, as this situation could actually happen, putting you in a situation where all the evidence is stacked against you and there's not much you can do. I really like how the show depicts how the media can affect cases, as well as how evidence is used in a case. I highly recommend this show to anyone who hasn't already seen it.

It also showed the intensity of what an ongoing trial is like for both the state and the defendant.

I really like this show because I love crime shows like Law and Order, Criminal Minds, etc. and this is like the afterwards part you don't get to see. It's even more intriguing because these are real people, who did real things, who are really on death row; not actors. Some are from San Antonio, which is very close to where I grew up and being able to see how and why the law gave them the death penalty is fascinating.

Hello, I'm Carrington T. from the 2 p.m. class.

When it comes to television and law, the question is a bit vague in whether or not it must be U.S. law.
I point out this distinction because my initial response would have been Game of Thrones, which while often harsh and lacking the characteristics of a representative democracy, it does have a very clear and rigid system of law that has been the framework of the narrative for the show.

But in the case that I have misjudged this question and it is indeed not the proper place to inject Game of Thrones discussions, I would like to cite a secondary answer of the film Marshall. The film is a biopic of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, an extraordinary attorney, and justice. I enjoy this film because it does not follow the expected narrative of his most landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education. But it actually follows a smaller case in which he defended an African-American man falsely accused of rape. The film does a great job of demonstrating the nuances of legeal proceedings including the severity of jury selection and the power of plea deals.

The case while seemly anecdotal not only gives context to the legal and political landscape of the U.S. for African-Americans at the time, but sets the stage for the landmark case to come of Brown v. Board of Education.

I honestly can't think of many serious law movies off the top of my head, but one movie that I find myself thinking about a lot is "My Cousin Vinny". It's about a Lawyer from New York trying a case in the deep south after his cousin is convicted of murder. Vinny isn't a particularly good lawyer, but the main character didn't have many options. In the end, they end up winning the case despite numerous setbacks and difficulties.

It's a pretty classic 90's comedy, so it has most of the things you'd expect from that. Hijinks and misunderstandings, over the top characters, and a heartfelt finale. I recommend checking it out if you are a fan of early Adam Sandler films, although it may not be the best law movie.

Good Afternoon😁

Let me introduce myself, my name is Alicia Sherrill and I am in your TR 2 pm class. This response was slightly delayed because I couldn't decide on just one law medium. Hands down, I was completely obsessed with Law and Order back in 2010. Dick Wolf is an excellent producer that knows how to keep an audience engaged for hours. There was something so catchy about that intro sound "boom boom"; that everytime I heard it I knew I was going to be on the edge of my seat for the next hour. The setting was always in New York and the plot consisted of their special victims unit trying to solve a "heinous" crime. Despite all the crime I was exposed to in every episode it still made me wanna visit New York.

However, the movie "Legally Blonde" with Reese Witherspoon is my college mantra-- I live every day of my college life like Elle Woods when Warner told her she wasn't smart enough to go to law school. In the movie, she not only gets accepted into law she becomes a better lawyer than her misogynistic ex-boyfriend. I'm not implying I am seeking vengeance or trying to be better than an ex-boyfriend, but I am striving to be an example for people and an inspiration for any woman who was told she wasn't smart enough to do a man's job.

Im Dilynn-Paige Ewing in the 11 am class. My favorite show relating to law is "how to get away with murder". Even though the show has a lot of drama relating to murder, they still have cases where you can learn how the law works. The main character Annalise Keating is one hardcore lawyer. She has 5 law students help her on her cases and they learn through actually having real cases to deal with. But theres still lots of drama in between all the case work.

My name is Michelle M. and I am in the 2 p.m. class. My favorite law related show lately is The People v OJ Simpson. I thought it was incredibly frustrating but also interesting that OJ's lawyers used his race to garner sympathy for his cause even though he had nothing to do with the African American community. It was also interesting to see how even the best lawyers, like Marcia Clark, were treated so poorly because they were women. Plus, the little things they did to manipulate the jury and the public perception of it all was incredible and maddening!

I'm Ivana G. and I'm in the 2:00 pm class. My favorite law related movie is a documentary called "The Central Park Five" which examines a case that took place in the 80s. Five men, ages 14-15 at the time of the incident, were wrongfully convicted for the rape and attempted murder of a New York woman jogging in Central Park. After spending 13 years in prison, Matias Reyes, who's a serial rapist and convicted murderer confessed to the crime and it was confirmed with newly developed DNA evidence. The five men's convictions were vacated in 2002, and they sued New York City. This is one of my favorite documentaries because it highlights how detrimental wrongful convictions can be, and how their lives go on after exoneration. It also amazes me because it opened my eyes to just how many wrongful convictions occur in the U.S., and how these five men lived their entire young adult lives locked up for something they had no part in. It's incredible and devastating all at the same time.

I love this well-told (based on true) story of investigative journalism as the journalists sought truth about a very impactful series of events in modern-American history. The film covers the story of the team of Boston Globe journalists who followed a trail of child molestation cases involving the Catholic church in New England that took place from the 1960's into the early 2000's. The Boston Globe had to be given permission from to publish legal documents and information from the documents in order to tell their story, and through some trials, they were able to do it.

Hi everyone! I am Bella Lopes from the 2 p.m. TR class.

I have spent an embarrassing amount of time listening to crime podcasts such as Casefile, Criminal, Crimetown, etc... Although these don't necessarily apply to law, it's very interesting to hear about such absurd criminal cases and how the public deals with it. Besides that, I have always enjoyed shows such as How to Get Away With Murder, Scandal, and Law & Order SVU.

About 2 years ago I was lucky enough to find the book Picking Cotton: Our Memoir of Injustice and Redemption by Erin Torneo, Jennifer Thomson-Cannino, and Ronald Cotton. This story follows a wrongful conviction in the point of view of both parties involved. Picking Cotton definitely changed my views of the CRIJ system and gave me hope that it can be fixed. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in finding an inspiring, powerful story about the criminal system! I also really enjoyed Last Chance in Texas: The Redemption of Criminal Youth by John Hubner. This non-fiction was an eye opener to the world of the Juvenile system and rehabilitation.

Hello my name is ALejandro H. and I am in the 2pm class.

My favorite movie related to law is The Social Network. I enjoy for the well crafted dialogue and it's ability to keep the situations in the hearings intense while also revealing much of the story. Aaron Sorkin is one my favorite screenwriters and this movie is one of his best in my opinion. The Social Network is a bio pic about Mark Zuckerberg and the rise of Facebook through the lens of one of his most famous lawsuits.

Hi guys! My name is Whitney C and I'm in the 2pm class. My favorite TV show related to law is How To Get Away With Murder. This is my favorite show that relates to law because it show's how REAL "it depends" is in law. Law professor and lawyer Annalise Keating chooses 5 students to intern at her law firm and in the first season you find out Annalise's husband Sam is dead, as well as a college freshman Lila. Season one explores Sam's and Lila's murders through flashbacks and trying to figure out who did it/ how it happened. Annalise and her team do some twisted things on the show to make cases look the way they want it to though, so I don't think this is a positive viewing of things related to law, but I enjoy the content!

My name is James Nelson S. I am in the 11:00 Tu/Th course. My downright favorite movie that is related to law has gotta be My Cousin Vinny with the fiery Joe Pesci and the incorruptible Marisa Tomei. The movie takes us through the hilarious process of New York lawyer Vinny taking on and winning a murder case in Alabama, and you'll even learn some things about law along the way. You'll also learn that Marisa Tomei is so angelic and wonderful you don't know if you want her to be your best friend, or your wife. Or your mom. 10/10 would recommend this film.

Hi, My name is Stephanie Orea and I'm in the 2pm T/Th Class.

My favorite show related to law would have to be Drop Dead Diva. It's a show about a shallow/superficial model who dies and comes back to life as a smart and overweight lawyer, known as Jane. At first she has no idea what she's doing but soon adjusts to her new life. While watching the show I learned the many ways the law can apply -- it really does work on a case by case basis. In one of my favorite episodes Jane has to help a client who has been a victim of cyberbullying. Her client's photo was leaked exposing her in a bra. Jane went to the D.A. and got the bully arrested, but the D.A. also pressed charges to Jane's client for creating and distributing "pornographic material' of a minor even though she took the picture herself.

Hi my name is Madelyne M and I am in the 2pm class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My favorite TV show related to law is Bull. Dr. Jason Bull is a psychologist who works with a team of lawyers to help them find the right way to win cases for their clients.

My favorite book in relation to the law is George Orwell's novel "1984". The book is about a dystopian future where the government is in complete control over everything and everyone. People are stripped of their personal freedoms and liberties. The novel serves as a warning to allowing laws to become too powerful and dominating.

Hello!

My name is Sofia Carranza and I am in the 11AM class! MY favorite show related to the law is How to Get Away With Murder. Each case that is brought on to the characters in the show is intriguing and even though I am nothing close to a law student, I found that the show did a great job with implementing realistic law terms and case studies. I was actually able to comprehend some of the law terms you use in class just because I heard it on the show!

Hello everyone! I'm Michael and I'm in the 2 pm class. while I'm not exactly a huge fan of law shows, one movie in particular that's close to having to do something with Law would be the Martin Scorsese Biographical Comedy, The Wolf Of Wall Street. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort and Jonah Hill as Donnie Azoff (a fictional character in the movie whose real name was Danny Porush), whose characters both founded the company Stratton Oakmount. The company was criticized for it's involvement with pump and dump schemes and eventually the company was involved in a USSC case against Prodigy Services Company (https://h2o.law.harvard.edu/cases/4540). Near the end of the film, Belfort was sentenced to jail for three years but started venturing into hosting seminars about selling techniques after his release.

I'm Katrina Dinh and I'm in your 2 pm class! I enjoy Criminal Minds, because the amount of different cases they go through and how criminals think, and the process of cracking a case! I've heard about Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press, I'm very interested in starting that next!

My favorite shows related to law are Criminal Minds and CSI (Vegas & Miami) because I grew up watching them. I was even convinced for a time that I was going to major in Forensic Science because I found CSI so fascinating, but we can see that that didn't really work out so well!
I'm sure most people know what these shows are, but Criminal Minds focuses on FBI agents in the Behavioral Analysis Unit and they solve cases by trying to get into the suspects minds. CSI is about forensic scientists and crime scene investigators solving cases as well.

I'm Sam McCarthy, and I'm in the 2 PM class.
One of my favorite shows about law has to be AMC's Better Call Saul, mainly due to it's rather good comedic moments. Plus Saul as a character is really interesting, and the cinematography is great. Better Call Saul is a Breaking Bad spinoff series about the lawyer Saul Goodman, and his descent into corruption and how he becomes the person he is in Breaking Bad. It's got a really good mix of comedy and drama.

Hello my name is Julio H. and I am from your 11am class. One of my favorite movies that has to do with law is The Butler; in the movie it depicts an African American butler who worked for several presidents at the whitehouse and throughout his time there he learned about the behind the scenes process of the president while also keeping quiet and following the rules. The butler’s son however was much more outspoken in the terms of the law. He partook in the acts of the civil rights movements which then moved forward and connected a bit with how law changes and government implementations are shown. It’s a good movie and it was an eye opener for how the laws were in terms of segregation and services.

Hello! My name is Kayla Terrazas and I am in the 2pm class. One of my favorite show involving law is For The People. This show is a drama that takes you behind the role of both prosecutor and defendant. The show gives you an idea of how either side deals with tough cases and how they interact with their clients. The show is binge-worthy and even though it's a drama series, I believe they do a very great job at applying real law and ways of thinking.

Hi my name is Natalie Krupp and I'm in the 2pm

My favorite movie about law would have to be Legally Blonde. It is one of my favorites because its also a musical and I have been acting and singing since i was very little . It is about Delta Nu President, Elle Woods who’s only real college goal is to become the wife of Warner Huntington III and she thinks she’s about to get an engagement ring but he dumps her before he goes to law school because she isn’t “serious” enough. So, she follows him to law school to prove she is serious enough to get him back and to prove she is not just your average “blonde”. She gets picked from her law class to be put on a team to help their professor solve/win a murder case. She wins the case for her team and graduates from Harvard Law School and doesn’t even want Warner at he end.

Hello people! Just a bit late on joining the conversation, but I am in the 2pm class Tuesday and Thursday. I would switch the movie and put my favorite law TV show. It would have to be Prison Break. This is my ultimate favorite TV show out there. It demonstrates how the law can incriminate someone who had nothing to do about it. The show consist of a brother who purposely goes to jail to break his brother out. HIs older brother Lincoln was framed for killing the vice president. Multiple legal steps are placed in the story and it really teaches you a thing or two about the legal system in prison. overall he ends up breaking his brother out, but without me ruining the batch I would stop there and advise anyone to watch the show!

My name is Jared Balderrama and i'm in the 2 P.m. class. My favorite song is Fortunate son by Creedence Clearwater because it if you don't listen to the lyrics to the song it. The song is about the draft and how the lead singer is not lucky enough to the avoid the draft by going to either going to school or being in a family that has enough money to send him away! it does sound patriotic, but in a different way than you think!

My name is Benn Ginigeme and I'm in the 2 pm class. My favorite song is The Heart pt 2 by Kendrick Lamar because it relates to me so much. The song is about the every day life of Kendrick Lamar and what he thinks about on a day to day basis. He hits on numerous topics and they flow so well together as he raps one verse for nearly 5 minutes. I also enjoyed the production on that songs and it's also the first song on my favorite project by Kendrick Lamar.
