Welcome, Fall 2022 classes!

Welcome to my Media Law blog. I use this blog as a teaching tool that allows me to comment on current events and topics related to media law. It also allows you to participate in discussions involving media law topics.

As the name of the blog suggests, I want you to use this forum to speak freely about the topics that we will discuss during the fall semester.

We will discuss some controversial topics -- and often, we may not agree. You may not agree with me, or you may not agree with your classmates.

But this is a forum of expression, so you have the right to express your opinion. My opinion is not correct just because I'm the instructor. You should feel free to disagree with me.

Think about this as the First Amendment in practice.

A few ground rules, please. Some of our discussions may become heated. While you have the right to express your opinion, I urge you to be considerate of others, especially those with whom you disagree. Avoid attacking or belittling someone just because you disagree with his or her opinion. And, I suggest you double check your comment for grammar, clarity and sensitivity before you post.

With your comment, please include your first name and the initial of your last name, and your class (11 a.m. class, 3:30 p.m. class or Online class). I need this information to keep track of your comments for participation points.

You can get an idea of how I used this blog in past semesters, though you are not responsible for reading or commenting on previous blog entries.

Now, let's start with something light.

Share with us a favorite book, movie, TV show, song, etc., that is related to law, then tell us why it's your favorite and include a brief summary of the work.

I'll go first. In past semesters, the movie I would call my favorite was "Twelve Angry Men" -- the original with Henry Fonda. But in 2012, I saw Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and was thoroughly impressed. The movie recounts President Lincoln's effort to encourage Congress to pass the Thirteen Amendment, which abolished slavery. A movie about passing a constitutional amendment? How perfect for a media law prof!

I look forward to reading your comments.

For me a show dealing with the law is the Wire. Its a great show because it shows all levels of the law. From those that break it, manipulate it, police, media, judicial systems and how the law is enforced. The first two season emphasis on convicting Avon Barksdale and his criminal enterprise in Baltimore. How using "a wire" and different ways to infiltrate his organization help to prosecute him. It also presents how he can manipulate the law by his money, influence and ultimately get a very low sentence.

My favorite movie involving the law would have to be Legally Blonde. Although it has a satire undertone of claiming that Harvard Law school is like “totally not that hard to get in to”, it does have some moments of practicing common criminal law.

“Twelve Angry Men” is one of my favorite movies (I actually own it on Prime haha)! I recently enjoyed watching the Netflix series “Inventing Anna”. It’s about a 26 year old woman, Anna Delvey (her real name is Anna Sorokin), who built a whole persona around being a German heiress. In reality she was a fraud. She financially scammed New York’s elite and the fraud was so extensive that the prosecutor had to deliver discovery to the defense in a box truck! She was offered a plea, but her desire to be famous drove her to turn it down. She decided to go to trial because she wanted to prove to people she wasn’t “a dumb socialite” (she seemed to really believe her own lies). The series takes place in present day during her trial, but tells the story through flashbacks. It’s actually really interesting that someone her age was able to defraud so many people, establishments, and institutions for as long as she did…especially in these modern times. - Ashleigh G. / 11 AM.

My favorite movie regarding law and or ethics I would say is The Wolf on Wall Street. This movie is based on a true story. The antagonist of the movie, Jordan Belfort is portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie it self touches on the subject of law and law making when Mr. Belfort uses his street smarts to munipulate wall street to his benefit in a not so legal way. Not to spoil the movie for any of my fellow class mates, but let's just say laws and stipulations are not so easily abused and gotten away with.

My favorite show regarding law is Criminal Minds. This show is as lawful as it gets because it deals with the criminal justice. Each episode of this show shares a fiction story about a serial killer and how the FBI catches them using psychology. In most cases, the episode ends by showing how the criminal was put away in prison and the process that comes with it.

"Dopesick" is about America's struggle with opioid addiction. Its on Hulu and it talks about the part the FDA and DEA play in the pharmaceutical buissness. The story is about the on-going war between the people and the government regarding the administration of opioids. Its a super interesting show since its based on real events.

My favorite show dealing with law is a Korean show on Netflix called Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Attorney Young-Woo is an autisic lawyer who just started working at a top law firm. The episodes focus on different cases that Young-Woo works on as a lawyer. I found the law aspect of the show very interesting despite not knowing much about law.

My favorite movie that is law related is Legally Blonde starting Reese Whetherspoon. I’ve never been to into law, but this movie makes the topic more interesting. The movie is about a sorority girl whose boyfriend breaks up with her to go to law school and then she gets back at him by going to Harvard and winning a court case he wanted to be in. I especially love the scene where the main character Elle is debating in court. This movie has won multiple awards and even has a sequel.

A favorite show of mine that I have seen so far is a Korean drama called Extraordinary Attorney Woo. It is about the life of "South Korea's first autistic attorney," as said in the show and each episode describes a different case in detail. Some of the episodes have touched on discrimination in the workplace, whether promises made verbally when it comes to money must be kept and construction that would disrupt a community's landscape. I feel like this show really shows how cases can be perceived from multiple perspectives and it has been super interesting to see how the cases play out.

My favorite tv show that involves law is the new Marvel show that came out called She-Hulk. I have always been a huge fan of superhero movies and tv shows and it has been interesting to me to see one involving law. It is about the Hulks cousin who gets Bruce Banners blood in her and becomes a Hulk. She is trying to become a district attorney but ends up getting switched to taking criminal cases for other superheroes and super villains. Its super interesting to see them implement law to the superhero genre and I'm excited to see how the rest of the episodes turn out.

My favorite TV show that is related to law is “Monk”. It is my favorite because the show is very entertaining. It’s a show that has drama and a little comedy all mixed together. Also it’s one of my dad’s favorite shows and it reminds me of him. The premise of “Monk” is about a private homicide detective who has obsessive-compulsive disorder which developed after the loss of his wife. Each episode Adrian Monk helps his boss, the Police Chef of San Francisco, to solve a murder. Sometimes in an episode the audience is shown who is the killer and other times the audience finds out when Monk does.

My favorite TV show that involves law is Law and Order SVU. This show depicts the entire process of discovering a body or the victim of a violent crime, gathering evidence that leads to an arrest, and the process of the court proceedings and verdict. It’s really interesting to be able to see the detectives, lawyers, and judge all work together from start to finish on a case.

I would say I have to favorite tv shows based off of law! My first one would be Law and Order SVU, just because it covers a lot of behind the scenes of cases and it gives you so much knowledge about evidence, history, laws itself, and how court proceedings happen! My second favorite would be Marvel’s daredevil where it portrays a “neighborhood vigilante” who actually is blind and uses that has his hero cover-up. He basically lives two lives, one as a hero and one as a lawyer. It’s an interesting show to me because of how he uses cases to help with his side job as a vigilante! It shows how some cases intertwine with others!

Growing up, my mom's favorite thing to do was watch Law and Order SVU. I remember my eyes being glued to the TV while she thought I wasn't paying attention. After I fought her on it for years, she finally let me join her on the couch. Law and Order SVU is centered around Detective Olivia Benson, and the dedicated detectives who investigate vicious sex crimes in New York City. SVU taught me my Miranda rights before my ABC's. It's 24 seasons of pure entertainment!

My favorite law related book is To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel showcases the cruelty and bias of an early 1900's courtroom. It's a book that pulls no punches, as the child characters are stripped of their rose-colored glasses. Seeing the world as morally gray, with a legal system dictated by prejudice.

My favorite law related piece of content would have to be the Phoenix Wright video game series. Despite growing up with it for so long, I have only recently begun to play through the games for myself. What makes them so fun for me is the ways you go about speaking to various characters, collecting evidence for the current chapter's case, and how they play out in interesting narratives, twists and turns throughout the process of closing your case via the cross-examination of witnesses.

Although this show doesn't necessarily revolve around law as it has many subplots throughout its 9 seasons, How I Met Your Mother does have a handful of episodes that center around Marshall Eriksen (soon-to-be lawyer). You get to see Marshall's journey starting from when he was in law school all the way to the end of the series when he becomes a judge. There are even episodes that pertain to the few law-firms he worked at (corporate & environmental) and one specific episode all about prenups- Season 8, Episode 2 (which is one of my favorites).

My favorite movie that is relative to law is Erin Brockovich, which stars Julia Roberts. The movie is based on a true story where Brockovich is hired by an attorney following a car accident. Upon being hired, she stumbles upon a huge corporate cover up. Brockovich is able to uncover the truth and find justice for the people of the community that were affected by the corporate scandal. This movie has always inspired me because of Brockovich’s persistence, tenacity, and her ability to overcome the obstacles she faced in not having the same educational background as most other people in the field.

My favorite TV show that involves the law is, "Better Call Saul". My favorite TV show that is related to law is Money Heist. It is a show based in Spain which takes you through a perfectly crafted heist of the bank of Spain. It lets you into the mind of the criminals and how they plan to cover their tracks and escape punishment from the law. I really enjoy this show because it challenges the good guy bad guy trope. The show makes you root for the criminals instead of the law. This occurs in the series as well. They show how the media covers the story and how they turn this negative event into a positive thing which results in the citizens of Spain rooting for the criminals as well. It's really interesting how powerful the media can be.

One of my favorite law shows which is also a crime show is Dexter. This show is about a quiet and reserved man working as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami police department but moonlights as a vigilante, who lives by a "code" to seek justice for serious crimes committed. He observes the suspect and analyzes the evidence to confirm they are guilty before murdering and severing their limbs before dumping them in the ocean.
This show is heavy on ethics and law. Is Dexter doing the right thing by these criminals? They committed horrendous crimes but is it ethical to take into your own hands? The police department investigates all these murders unbeknownst to them that it is one of their own that is committing them. The show gets pretty spicy.

My favorite show relating to law is How to Get Away With Murder. It is a show on Netflix about a law professor and her interns. It has a lot of suspense, drama, and thriller. The first season starts with a murder mystery. Throughout the seasons, it shows how the professor, a defense lawyer, gets her students and herself out of trouble repeatedly. It's an exciting show that I recommend.

My favorite TV show is How to Get Away with Murder. It is about a law professor and the interns from her class. It starts off with the accidental death of the professor's husband done by the interns. And then goes back in time to how it led up to that and answers many questions. The professor helps her interns get away with the murder, thus where the name comes from. Throughout the show, other implications come up and it is overall a very suspenseful and well-thought-out show. I hate rewatching movies or shows I have already seen before, but I'd gladly rewatch this one.

I would have to say that my favorite movie or play related to law is "Legally Blonde." Although the work isn't necessarily a very serious law film, it did spark my interest in the subject when I played multiple characters in a high school production of "Legally Blonde." I played the judge in the play and I really enjoyed the role (even though I knew nothing of law practices or methods at the time).

My favorite movie related to law is Law abiding citizen. The work has to do with Gerard Butler playing a father and husband that wanted justice for the death of his daughter and wife in a home invasion incident. The judge rules one man to death and the other is basically a slap on the wrist. He then goes after every person involved in the case and gets his revenge. I love this law movie because Gerard finds loopholes out of the law system and plays the right pieces to get what he wants without getting in major trouble.

One of my favorite movies that deal with law is "On the Basis of Sex" starring Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Not only is this movie empowering by showing the strength and value women can have in place of power. It also showcases the injustice and discrimination many women face and that we continue to fight today.

Hi I have a couple of shows that I favor that deals with law but the one I would have to say is a favorite is "How To Get Away with Murder". The way this show was produced made it very entertaining for me to keep up with it from season to season because their was a overall plot and then a plot that vary each season that had a murder mystery aspect to it.Since this show centers around young adults who are in law school we got to see a lot of trials take place each episode and got a taste of what it takes to be a great lawyer.

At the moment my favorite book is Where the Crawdads sing by Delia Owens. Although the entire book isn't about law we do follow a murder case in court in the book. I found it interesting to see how a court case goes down, and it's especially interesting to see how some people may be wrongfully judged solely based on the assumptions others have already made on them. Leading to an unfair trial.

I have a few shows that are comedies or dramas that I watch relating to law but I also love to watch true crime documentaries and docuseries. Right now I am watching "Mind of Murder" on HBO Max. It is the story of the Beatrice 6 and tells the story of the most infamous exoneration in American history. It talks a lot about DNA testing which I find very interesting especially because recent testing has actually exonerated a lot of wrongly convicted individuals.

One of my favorite movies involving the topic of law, is the classic To Kill a Mockingbird. This is based on the book by Harper Lee. In the film we see lawyer and father Atticus Finch, step up to defend a black man, "Boo" Radley, who is accused of a terrible crime against a white woman. The film takes place in a time when racial inequality is at its height. Atticus holds true to his beliefs and morals while defending Boo, and in the process teaches his two young kids, Scout and Jim, many important lessons in life; one being that sometimes the right thing to do, is not the most popular thing to do.

In regards to different movies and tv shows embracing and containing legal action and law. I would saw that my favorite is the tv show How to Get Away With Murder. I find while still being truthful to real world law and being specific with the diction and plot summaries they use, allows the show to be more realistic and appealing to the viewer. However, what makes the show even more intresting is in the negative and deceptive view points that the protagonists take.

My favorite movie involving the topic of law is Molly's Game. This movie is based on the true story of Molly Bloom, she was qualified for the olympics before she got involved with the FBI. After the olympics was over for her due to an injury she then ran the world's most exclusive poker game, including movie stars, directors, and billionaires. She only took a rake one time after she had ran this game for a decade. One night, she is woken up to the FBI at her door charging her with the crime of running an illegal poker game, even though she hadn't ran the game in a couple years. After finding a lawyer who will work with her since her name had been all over the tabloid's, she went to court where the judge only made her serve probation. The judge referenced that crimes like this happen before noon on wall street and that she shouldn't be sent to prison. This is my favorite movie relating to law because of how the press can manipulate their audience when only Molly knew the whole story.

My favorite song regarding the law is Born2Run by Penelope Scott.

Knowing there are people out there that share my frustration with the law and the disconnect from the legislation and the people is reassuring. It's on a playlist I play when I feel particularly riled up about the shortcomings and failings of our government on the part of the people.

It's about my generation being upset with the way those in power respond to issues plaguing the general public, and the apathy they seem to embody when it comes to these issues. Scott speaks on the inalienable rights, mentions her worry for the healthcare system, gun control, and her growing restlessness with those in power that do not take my generation seriously.

Enough is a movie with Jennifer Lopez as the protagonist, who falls in love with a man and realizes he is abusive towards her physically and emotionally. They share a child together and after the last straw the protagonist sneaks away with the child and completely change their identities. The story shows the struggles the protagonists faces because her abuser is the father of her child who now reports their child as a missing person. The protagonist also struggles with having a foot hold on not wanting to return the child but also wanting a restraining order. At the end the protagonist and her husband fight where he ultimately dies and the only way she could protect herself was to claim the fight as self defense.

My all time favorite book that involves law, as well as journalism, is Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. The book, which was turned into a TV series starring Amy Adams, revolves around a number of gruesome murders happening in the main character's, Amy Adams, home town where her abusive mother and rest of her small family resides. She tried her best to work with law enforcement on the case but quickly became someone they distrusted because she was a journalist. The murders were so disturbing and continuous that a detective from the city got involved as well. It was a bunch of young girls being killed and their teeth ripped out. The book and movie follows along with the case as well as showing bits of Adam's character's dark and sad past. I don't want to spoil anything else because it is a really good watch and read, but you will not expect the culprit at all.

The movie Higher Learning is a great movie for me because of the perspective it puts on a Black man in college and even broader the world. The movie depicts different racial interactions between blacks and whites and how they accept each other & how law enforcement and others treat them. Overall, the movie shows the difference between the two and generally how harsh others can be just because they feel you don't belong or you're a higher-up. In the end, a shooting happens where a white man is on top of a roof and kills a black man on campus. In all, we are all equal partially but, in various cases, I feel that that statement fails to remain true due to different climates in the world.

My favorite song involving the law is called Lockdown by an artist known as inappropriate. This song is not just a story about the artist's time in the system but details how events in the world can lead to incarceration. Spending time behind bars can take away years from a person's life and change how they may live in the world after being released. Inappropriate heavily mentions the reality that many people like him may face and shows how the system does not always work for the greater good of the people it is supposed to protect. Many artists no longer make what I would consider protest music. The type of music that opens people's way of thinking against a biased system. This song is my favorite because it's more than a story. It's a cry for help towards an unjust system.

My favorite show that involves the law is a Korean drama called Vincenzo. It follows the Sicilian mafia's lawyer, or consigliere, as he carries out a job to collect gold hidden under a residential building in Seoul. When he arrives in Korea he learns that a corporation has illegally taken over the building, so he has to use his expertise in the courtroom in order to reclaim ownership and return to Italy. Along the way, he gets wrapped up in a pharmaceutical malpractice case with a lawyer that lived in the residential building he was fighting to own. I really liked this show because it was centered around cases that aren't usually depicted on television. Following these business suits was still as exciting as the shows that follow violent crimes. I highly recommend this show to anyone that can bear with subtitles for 20 episodes.

My favorite book I've read that included the law was "Reminders of him" by Colleen Hoover. Not only does it include murder and the custody of a child with a deceased father, but a mother being found guilty for the death of him. This book is all about love, loss, and forgiveness between Kenna, the mother of Deim, and Ledger, her now deceased ex boyfriend's best friend. The court comes into play when she is found guilty for the death of Scotty, yet she didn't mean too as it was a really bad car accident and sentenced 5 years in prison. This was left with Scottys grandparents to take custody of Diem till she was 18. This is my favorite book of all time and definitely had me in tears at the end.

My favorite book relating to law is Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. It is a satirical war novel about the American military in World War II. Heller focuses on the bureaucracy and absurdity of American law in the army. The overly specific laws which ignore the individuality of the soldiers and their severe circumstances helped me to see flaws of systems of law which disregard the humanity of the individual.

I would have to say my current favorite show having to do with law would be the new Marvel show She Hulk on Disney+. I have been a long time marvel fan and Hulk was always one of my favorites. Seeing this new take on She Hulk (Jenifer Walters) and how she has to deal with balancing unwillingly becoming a super hero and being an attorney at law is very inspiring. The main character decides she is not going to throw away her life and career she worked so hard to achieve just to help protect the world. In true girl boss fashion she decides she was going to do them both. I am so excited to see how this character develops throughout the series and how she will manage to save the world not just in the courtroom, but out in the real world as well.

I would say my favorite is Wolf of Wall Street. I like this movie because it is an exciting movie with many recognizable actors. Over the summer I have become so envoleped with movies and the theory and background that goes along with them. Some of my favorite genres have been stuff like mafias some examples would be The Irishman and Goodfellas. The Wolf of Wall Street was a cool modern take on that. All the business side of things and how it is an intense crime even though the "hurting" of people takes place in a financial form rather than physical violence. The Wolf of Wall Street lowkey scams people and gets away with it. I have not looked into the aftermath of the "wolf" myself but I have heard from others that he continues on his legacy through informational talks and the such. I am both enamored by him but saddened on the toll it took in the people just trying to create a better life by chance.

My favorite TV show that involves law is How to Get Away with Murder. The main character is a lawyer who is also a professor. She's a criminal defense attorney and selects 5 of her students to become interns at her firm. It goes in depth about a lot of criminal law and the judicial system. I learned a lot just from watching. I'm not really into law and will never be a lawyer, but I really got into this show. I 100% recommend it!

Though not my favorite Katy Perry song, her song “Dark Horse” attracted plenty of unexpected controversy in copyright law to spark my legal interests, thus, making it my favorite legal song.

In November 2017, Marcus Gray and his legal team filed an operative complaint for copyright infringement against Katy Perry. They claimed that she took Gray’s original work in his song “Joyful Noise.” Gray’s legal team argued that ostinatos, a repeating musical element, in “Joyful Noise” were his original work. Lacking direct evidence, they substantiated that ostinatos in “Dark Horse” and “Joyful Noise” were similar enough to justify a tort against Gray.

In a nutshell, the jury awarded Gray $2.8 million, but the defendants moved for judgment as a matter of law (JMOL), and the JMOL was affirmed by the 9th Circuit Court. The judges found that the ostinatos in question are musical tools, like letters in the alphabet being used to write a book, available in the public domain. The testimony of the expert in the trial court brought up the similarities in the ostinatos but failed to describe the legal aspects of ostinatos to the jury.
After reading Chapter 1 of our textbook, most of the technical aspects of the case made better sense to me.

My favorite TV show involving the law is a show called Monk. I enjoy Monk because it blends drama, comedy, and realism into a show about a "defective detective". The show follows a detective who has an extreme case of OCD after the loss of his wife. Having lost his job with the San Francisco Police Department, he now helps them has a consultant, solving cases when other detectives didn't even know where to start. He's extremely smart and very good at solving cases, but his little quirks put a twist on it that makes it very entertaining.

My favorite show that deals with law is Forensic Files. I'm sure everyone knows about this show but it's a show that tells the stories of those in law enforcement and the families that were involved in serious crimes. One of my favorite movies that relates to law is Marshall. The reason being is because it shows how racial injustice can affect an innocent's life. This movie gives the story of one of Thurgood Marshall's earliest cases; the trial of Joseph Spell, an African-American accused of raping a white woman.

My favorite TV show about the law is, “How to get away with murder”. Viola Davis stars as Annalise Keating, a brilliant criminal defense professor, and her group of interns who are also her students. The show highlights their own twisted murder plot while incorporating the cases they defend. I love how well Viola Davis played her character and the use of legal jargon throughout the series.

One of my favorite films that relates to law is The Lincoln Lawyer. It's a close tie with Primal Fear, which also has a dark, sinister twist. The Lincoln Lawyer follows the lead character, Mickey Haller, played by Mathew McConaughey, a criminal defense attorney. He is known mainly for taking on minor, low-end criminals, and it's clear he has a somewhat unconventional way of approaching his work. He is clever, well-tied, and respected. However, his career and life are derailed after taking a high-profile case that unearths a string of lies and deceit. I thoroughly enjoy McConaughey's performance, and the plot is well-rounded. A notable mention concerning law is The Devil's Advocate, one of my favorite films. Great film.

One of my favorite shows as of recently that deals with law would be Daredevil on Netflix. My favorite law-related book is Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. I love this book because it provides a remarkable psychological perspective into the mind of a killer. The main character, Raskolnikov, is written in a way that allows the reader to easily empathize with the rationalizations and moral dilemmas of an impoverished college student hell-bent on murdering his landlady. The book follows Raskolnikov through the process of murder and justice, detailing the disintegration of his psyche as faces the consequences of his actions. I definitely recommend checking this book out (or any of Dostoyevsky’s work) if you haven't already, it's a very good read and Dostoyevsky is a brilliant author.

I would say that my favorite television series that relates to law is Criminal Minds (2005) since it is a crime drama series with mystery that leaves the audience thinking about what will happen next which is what I like in a show, suspense; never knowing what to expect. The show revolves around a team of F.B.I. profilers who crack down on various crime cases happening throughout the surrounding areas and attempt to prevent future strikes from occurring. The show has 15 seasons and can be streamed on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, to list a few.

I have to go with To Kill a Mockingbird as my favorite law-related book. I know we were all forced to read it at some point but I really enjoyed it. The book follows a pair of siblings growing up in a small town in Alabama in the early 1960's. Their father was a lawyer that was defending a black man who was falsely accused of rape. The novel highlighted the trial that was fueled by racism and the hardships the children faced just because their father was helping a black man.

My favorite show related to law would probably have to be How to Get Away with Murder. It's a show that follows a criminal defense attorney and renowned professor, Annalise Keating, and a few of her students who got the opportunity to basically intern with her and accompany and contribute to various cases she took on. It's one of my favorites because the plot is super interesting, and each season follows a different huge scandal/crime by retracing its steps and eventually leading up to the big reveal at the end. Even though it was a drama, some of the information that was given in the show at different points were actually helpful to understanding certain legal terminology and how various types of cases can typically be handled. I also just love Viola Davis. :)

My favorite show is one I've started recently, Extraordinary Attorney Woo. It's a Korean drama show that follows Young-woo Woo, a woman with autism working for a big-name law firm. She has eidetic memory of laws that helps her against opposing lawyers and often wins her cases. The show deals with a various cases as well as controversial outlooks in South Korea, such as the stigma of autistic people. It's one of my favorites because each episode deals with a different case, as well as the drama involving Young-Woo, the male lead, and the supporting characters. I also love when Young-Woo solves the cases and explains how her and her team can win their cases. It's definitely a great show to check out, especially if you love K-dramas!

I remember watching it every afternoon with my mom ( it was one of her favorites). the name in itself says everything ( based on dealing with criminal justice). Every episode is different but it's based on different crimes committed by serial killers/criminals and how the FBI tries to solve the case in order to catch the culprit. it shows the full process of how the victim got killed, the evidence to support, tracking the criminal, the sentence, and what happens after. It's a really good show and you see the character development of the main FBI cast and how each case can affect them etc.

I recognized her from watching her in Mexican Telenovelas. After watching a few episodes, I was hooked! Exciting show!

My favorite Tv show, or movie related to law would have to be "Legally Blonde" though it's become more of a cliche now, I still find the meaning behind the movie to be one that is not represented well in most movies because of all the stereotypes that go with it. The Movie follows a pretty wealthy and blonde girl who is starting law school with the typical playwright affects you would see in any teenage drama or coming of age production. However, it diverts the norm through giving the protagonist character and personality that allows them to grow as a 3-dimensional personal with multiple layers-complex instead of a flat expected set of growth marks that would represent the character.

My favorite tv show that is related to law is How to Get Away With Murder. This show was a very different aspect of law as it was based around a lawyer/ criminal law professor and five of her students who she selected to be a part of her firm after winning a case she presented to her class that she was working on. These 5 students were extremely happy to work with Professor Keating in the beginning because she was one of the most well-established lawyers in the game, but eventually things got a little messy and it became a rollercoaster of emotions, feelings, and sanity from that point on. After taking these students under her wing she brought them to trials and even got them twisted up into her personal life involving a sticky murder plot and from that point that's when things begin to get very interesting over the seasons. The show is so full of excitement and drama that you never really know what to expect next and I was always so excited to see what would happen in the next episode because they always leave you wanting more! I highly recommend this show to anyone!

One of my favorite stories revolves around comic books and movies about the X-Men. I love superheroes and watching shows and movies. As I grew up, I realized how the characters and stories are about civil rights. Professor X resembles an MLK approach and magneto has a Malcolm X approach. They want to be treated equally in the world and it mimics American historical legislation like the thirteenth and first amendment. It shows how people who are “different” had to fight to be treated equally.

For me, it can be hard to get into a show regarding law, as I never would have taken an interest in it. However, the combination of action and law is entertaining, especially when the protagonist is trying to fight for what's right whether it be inside or outside the law.

I think my favorite media involving law is going to be Daredevil. I’m a big fan of superhero movies and shows and I really like the contrast of the main characters’ personas as a Vigilante and as a lawyer. Daredevil is about a lawyer in New York named Matt Murdock who has superhuman senses which he uses to take down the criminals the legal system can’t get to, a major point of conflict in the show is Matt trying to stick to the rules as a lawyer while also avoiding the law as daredevil. It a very dark and shows lots of themes of violence and guilt.

I haven't watched a lot of media involving law, so I would have to say my favorites closest to that would be NBC's Hannibal with Mads Mikkelsen and Breaking Bad. Now that I think about it, I thoroughly enjoyed Better Call Saul and that had a lot to do with law! It's a show that could definitely be used in a case study about shady ethics as well.

For Better Call Saul, it's the spin off of the hit series Breaking Bad. Though, it stands on it's own as a very complete and exciting show whether you have watched the original series or not. It follows lawyer, Saul Goodman (Jimmy McGill) who has fled his old life and is living as a GM at a Cinnabon. Most of the show is an incredibly prolonged flashback that shows how he got to this dim and quiet life. He's an unreliable narrator as a character and is constantly getting himself into trouble through his "out-of-the-box" legal tactics. I definitely recommend.

Looking forward to a great semester!

My favorite movie related to law would have to be "A Fall from Grace". Released in 2020 and being based off of a true story, the film demonstrates how unfair the government system has been in certain situations regarding women and even more, women of color. It begins with an older lady who is recently divorced and becomes very vulnerable. She falls in love with a man much younger and believes she found love, but soon realizes she is living a nightmare. I enjoyed watching this film for many reasons, but one of them being that within the film there is a portrayal of the constant dismissing of women and their ability to successfully complete their jobs. That being said, in "A Fall from Grace", the older lady is ultimately arrested for financial issues that she was framed for and is provided with a beginner attorney that nobody believes will win her case. Luckily, without realizing, she had gained both, a strong willed attorney and a new opportunity to prove everyone wrong.

My favorite movie related to law would have to be the 2019 film "Knives Out". It is a mystery film that follows a detective named Benoit Blanc who is investigating the death of a famous novelist named Harlan Thrombey. The movie features members of the Thrombey family and their housekeeper who are all considered to be suspects in the case. Throughout the film, family secrets are exposed and the audience is given the possible motive of each suspect. I absolutely loved this movie because of how well written and executed it was. I feel as if a lot of the murder mystery movies I watch are predictable, but I was completely shocked by the end of this film. The entire movie is carefully woven together and filled with plot twists and hidden signs. While the real murderer might seem obvious to viewers, the explanation and evidence Detective Blanc provides is the real plot twist for me. In my opinion, it is a very good and fresh take on the typical and cliche murder mystery.

I have watched a good amount of shows that have included some type of law but one show that will always be my all time favorite is "Drop Dead Diva". This show actually set me on a path of wanting to study law and it convinced me to change my major after my first year of college to Criminal Justice. In the show a model gets killed in a car crash and is brought back to earth as completely different lifestyle. When she is brought back to life into a different body she has to learn how to be this new person since she doesn't have the body and looks she used to. The body she gets put into is a lawyer and as her former profession being a model she has no clue what she is doing. Throughout the show she learns and becomes a lawyer from her own battles and seeing this made me feel empowered and encouraged to keep pushing through the study of law. As the show is for entertainment as a women it makes you feel that even though she wasn't living the same life she still made do with what she was given.

My favourite TV show related to law would be HBO's Big Little Lies, specifically season 2. Celeste, played by Nicole Kidman, plays the distressed, recently-widowed mother of two beautiful, blond twin boys. Her husband, Perry, has been recently killed under suspicious circumstances, and his death was successfully covered up. Perry's mother and Celeste's mother-in-law, Mary Louise, is played by none other than Meryl Streep. Mary Louise sues Celeste for custody of the twin boys, claiming that Celeste is not in a mentally well enough state of mind to take care of her own children. However, Celeste is a former lawyer who retired from practicing when she became a mother, so she could dedicate all of her time to the twins. Celeste uses this prior knowledge of the law to represent herself in court. She wins the case, keeps custody of her two boys, and and she's able to continue peacefully raising them in the beautiful town of Monterey, California. It's a captivating story-arc filled with intense scenes that take place in a courtroom, and Kidman's and Streep's performances are very compelling.

In some ways, "1984" by George Orwell conveys different examples of how laws created by one centralized government can lead to totalitarianism. I don't plan on going too in-depth, but I believe that events throughout the book are comparable to America and many other countries across the globe. I can only speak for America and believe that there are examples of people brainwashed to believe that some of the laws created are necessary and just. After Roe v. Wade was overturned, there were cruel, sexist, and misogynistic comments. I have to ask who taught them to believe that having a say over someone elses body was acceptable in the first place? Why were the comments more focused on women not having control over their bodies than the children people seemed to say they were concerned about protecting? How is overturning Roe v. Wade solving issues such as poverty, gun control, the housing crisis, and anything else? These issues were prominent before Roe v. Wade was overturned and will sadly be prominent afterward.

I have been super into crime TV shows lately. My favorite has been cold cases because it is so interesting. A cold case is an unsolved criminal investigation, that is no longer active. Basically, when a murder or something goes unsolved it becomes a cold case. What is so fascinating about this show is that these cold cases become solved. The show examines some cases that happened 20+ years ago and new evidence comes up. The cases become solved and sometimes people were wrongfully convicted, or still out committing the same crimes.

One of my favorite movies regarding law has to be “A Few Good Men”. It is an interesting take on a corrupt practice used by the United States Marine Corps at a base in Guantanamo Bay where a soldier was tragically killed. The Movie is about a young hotshot lawyer who makes the point that no high ranking official has the right to a make a “Code Red”, order. An order that was supposed to be served as punishment which ultimately killed the young cadet. The movie highlights the corrupt practices used by higher ranking officials in the Marine corps at this time. The reason I found this movie so appealing was the amount of energy that was shown in the court room. It was a representation that no one is above the law, and it was shown in a rather dramatic fashion.

The law-driven character, Saul Goodman, is known for his radical efforts to help criminals of the law find retribution in civil court as well as on the streets. Whereas, in the prequel Jimmy McGill, later known as "Saul Goodman", is a law-abiding lawyer who seeks the truth in cases regarding more civil but equally as corrupt situations. There are many instances in the show where characters make questionable decisions and they come back to haunt them through the law getting involved. Through Succession one can see all different sides of the law including the crime, the cover up, and even the court hearings. I would highly recommend Succession to anyone who is interested in how laws fit into business, but wants to have an engaging story to go along with it.

I think my favorite show about law would have to be Criminal Minds. While it doesn't center around a courtroom setting, the show follows its main characters, members of the BAU, as they enforce the law across the US. They track down and put a stop to many criminals. Some of the episodes are even based on real cases.

My all time favorite law related show is How to get away with Murder. This show is about a group of law students and their legal professor who get twisted up in a murder and their journey to cover it up and dig themselves out of the web of lies. What I enjoy most about this show is that it is based on a group of students going through law school, rather than most other shows that are from the perspective of someone who has already completed their JD. Although the content and things that happen in How to get away with murder are pretty extreme and unrealistic, the legal jargon and court procedures are pretty accurate!

My favorite tv show regarding law is The Good Wife! It follows a defense attorney who has just recently returned to work after her husband was just involved in a major political scandal. The show was inspired by the Eliot Spitzer scandal. I really love how the show follows both the drama of Alicia's life after her husband humiliated her and the cases that Alicia is working on.

My favorite show is CSI Miami. It’s kind of cheesy but I really enjoy how creative they get sometimes to catch the criminal. The show is about crime scene investigators and how they find the killer.

My favorite movie that relates to law is Legally Blonde because it kept me interested and entertained about law. This movie shows a girl who decides to go to Harvard to prove to herself and everyone else that she is capable of graduating with a law degree. The main character, Elle, ends up solving a case because of her knowledge on hair. This movie is my favorite because it shows being a lawyer and going to law school in a fun and creative way.

My absolute favorite movie of all time is interstellar. The movie is set in the year 2090 and is about Earth slowly dying and humanity trying to survive and not die of starvation. Only a few things can still grow that can be eaten with the biggest crop they have being corn. The land is no longer fertile and dust storms are happening world wide. There are no more wars or conflicts as the remaining humans are just trying to farm and survive. The main protagonist, Cooper is an ex-air force pilot who accidentally discovers NASA who have kept themselves secret for many years trying to build a spaceship to explore new worlds and settle down somewhere else in the universe via a wormhole that has mysteriously showed up next to Saturn. They convince cooper to join the mission to leave Earth and explore space with a small team of scientists to find a suitable world for the next start of the Human race. I love this movie so much because of the realistic plot that could very well happen. The cinematography and soundtrack of the movie are absolutely amazing and watching it will make you feel very introspective.

My favorite piece of media related to law is The Shawshank Redemption. The Shawshank Redemption is about a man who is wrongfully convicted of killing his wife and the man she was having an affair with. In prison, he gains a new look on life from his fellow prison mates. He also learns that the people working for the prison are corrupt. For example, the warden makes him launder money. To me, this movie highlights the importance of always having a voice standing up for others.

My favorite media regarding law and (especially) ethics is the show Better Call Saul. The show follows a lawyer Saul Godman, who seeks his own criminal activity while dealing with the moral transgressions that follow. I'm far from a law expert - very far from, actually, but I still appreciate the few complex legal battles which take place throughout the show and which involve the many personalities and intricate bits of character development which are showcased throughout the show. Admittedly the legal aspect of the show isn't what I watch it for, but it's always there and always seems to make its way into the ever-changing plot.

My favorite movie related to the law would have to be Legally Blonde. The determination Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, had to get into law school even though all of her friends and family doubted her abilities was truly inspiring because she didn't let anyone tell her "no." The movie takes the viewers on a journey of what inspired her to even go to law school in the
first place. Then she realizes and proves to others that she was actually a good lawyer because of the case that she could solve that others couldn't.

My favorite movie is "The Wolf of Wall Street" Jordan Belfort is portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. This movie is very interesting when it comes to the law, and how Jordan Belfort expertly manipulated the stock market and created some of the first instances of the pump and dump scheme. Defrauding so many investors for millions is something that boggles my mind.

My favorite show that involves law is probably Mindhunter on Netflix. It is more about criminals than anything, but digs into the story of two detectives who almost coin the phrase 'serial killer'. It's interesting to see how the FBI handled these criminals and the protocols that were used.

My favorite movie regarding law is Dark Waters. When I first watched this movie, I was shocked by how the legal system failed a small town contaminated by dangerous chemicals through their water. In this movie, the company Dupont produces a chemical called PF08 that was originally used as a sealant on a multitude of products, especially cooking ware like pots and pans. Dupont is dumping the byproduct of this chemical in the water and is essentially poisoning a whole town as well as their livestock. What follows is the legal battle against Dupont and a single lawyer having to individually fight for each person affected by Dupont's carelessness. Dark Waters ended up being one of my favorite movies and really opened my eyes to the perils of the justice system.

My favorite show that involves the law is "Better Call Saul." It's a show about a man named Jimmy who struggled to find a consistent career but was inspired by his very successful brother to become a lawyer. Problems arise when Jimmy decides to work with criminals and tries to work around the law in order to help them. It's interesting because Jimmy is incredible at his new job but it involves a lot of risk due to the clients he chooses to work with and how he goes about it.

If I had to choose, I would say one of my favorite movies that is related to law would have to be Legally blonde. I loved Both legally blonde even the somewhat spin off Legally blondes but the first one is just so classic. Even though the movie is more on the witty humor side, there is moments throughout the movie that involves the law like when Elle takes over in the courtroom and proves that it was the daughter of the murdered who did it. Love that scene so much, shows real smart boss girl power there.

One of my favorite shows that I am currently watching that involves the law is "Better Call Saul". This show is about a character named Jimmy who is practicing law because his brother Chuck studied law, and went on to be partner of a law firm "Hamlin Hamlin McGill". However Jimmy gets involved in some sketchy situations where sometimes he has to play around with the law and manipulate people a little so it can favor him. This show also has plenty of law-related scenes, from lawyers working with clients, showing the amounts of hard work and paper work they need to review and get through, and scenes where they are in court trying to defend their case. Jimmy is also in "Breaking Bad" as "Saul Goodman" and you can see when the timelines connect between shows.

My dad and I love to watch mystery shows together and one of our favorites was "Bull". This show was about a man named Dr. Jason Bull and he and his team of associates would use analytics and a variety of tactics to help decide which jurors to choose that would work best in the client's favor. This show exemplifies how there are so many laws that people do not know about and how those laws could either benefit them or hurt them. Also, it goes to show that choosing the right people for your jury is very crucial in the court system.

My favorite show dealing with law is How to Get Away with Murder. It's interesting to see the perspective of the law students and how they plan to save the case for their infamous professor Keating. Of course the drama and situations they get themselves involved in is fascinating. Similarly to how they save their clients cases, it's interesting to see how they all plan to get out of the messes they. make for themselves.

My favorite movie that deals with the law would be Batman: Dark Knight Rises. The film with Christian Bale is one of my favorites of all time, and Gary Oldman has a performance as Commissioner Gordon that is one for the ages. The film deals with the law as it is exactly what it is based around, crime, law proceedings, court room drama, it has many aspects that relate to the law.

My favorite media that includes law is Hunger Games. The series has a book and a movie, most details reside in the books. Hunger games includes law by enforcing manipulated law against poverty stricken communities for the entertainment of rich people. The hunger games is a battle royale with teenagers against teenagers to be the last one standing. The law part really comes in after the first book/movie.

My favorite media involving law is The Wolf of Wall Street. A very long, drama-comedy shows the main protagonist Jordan Belford essentially hustle the stock market via penny stocks. The amount Leonardo DiCaprio’s character got away with is astounding, much like his performance.

My favorite show regarding the law is Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It is my favorite because it has a very specific type of humor that is similar to the office. It follows a NYPD cop through his day to day life and frequently mentions rules of the law. Its a great mindlessly entertaining show that I would recommend to anyone, especially if you like the office.

My favorite movie involving law would be the movie, Just Mercy. The movie follows a lawyer, Bryan Stevenson (played by Michael B. Jordan), who wishes to start a legal center for inmates on death row in Alabama. Although he was a lawyer from Harvard, he chose to go to Alabama and help people who could not afford proper representation. The first time I watched this movie, I had to pause a few times to jot down notes for an essay I was working on for class. Not long after, I watched it in its entirety, without pausing, and I still cried at the powerful scenes because the cast's performances were that astounding.

I really enjoy the TV show, The Blacklist. It's a crime show similar to criminal minds. The story follows a career criminal who turns himself in to the FBI in hopes of becoming an informant. He has this list of other criminals and terrorist organizations that he reveals so he can have the help of the FBI to catch them. You can tell very quickly that he has his own agenda, but for the greater good. In terms of law, this work shows the U.S. Government and law as much as the criminal side of things. It's interesting to see how each side works in response to each other even if it is just a TV show.
