Welcome to my media law blog. I use this blog as a teaching tool that
allows me to comment on current events and topics related to media law.
It also allows you to participate in discussions involving media law
topics.
As the name of the blog suggests, I want you to use this forum to
speak freely about the topics that we will discuss in MC 4301 Mass Communication Law & Ethics.
We will discuss some controversial topics -- and often, we may not
agree. You may not agree with me, or you may not agree with your
classmates.
But this is a forum of expression, so you have the right to express
your opinion. My opinion is not correct just because I'm the instructor.
You should feel free to disagree with me.
Think about this as the First Amendment in practice.
A few ground rules, please. Some of our discussions may become
heated. While you have the right to express your opinion, I urge you to
be considerate of others, especially those with whom you disagree. Avoid
attacking or belittling someone just because you disagree with his or
her opinion. And, I suggest you double check your comment for grammar,
clarity and sensitivity before you post.
With your comment, please include your
first name and initial of your last name. Also, include your class (MW, TTh or Online). I
need this information to keep track of your comments for participation points.
You can get an idea of how I used this blog in past semesters,
though you are not responsible for reading or commenting on previous
blog entries.
Now, let's start with something light.
Share with us a favorite book, movie, TV show, song, etc., that is related to law, then tell us why it's your favorite.
I'll go first. In past semesters, the movie I would call my favorite
is "Twelve Angry Men" -- the original with Henry Fonda. But in 2012,
I saw Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and was thoroughly impressed. The
movie recounts President Lincoln's effort to encourage Congress to pass
the Thirteen Amendment, which abolished slavery. A
movie about passing a constitutional amendment? How perfect for a media
law prof!
I look forward to reading your comments.

I have never been a big movie watcher, but if I had to pick a favorite movie related to law it would have to be Legally Blonde. I like that Elle Woods is a strong female who is underestimated and proves everyone wrong.

Even though I had to go through a lot of lists online remember if I had really seen any movies pertaining to law, I do remember watching Miracle on 34th Street when I was younger. I like it because even though the movie is about Santa Claus, they take it to a believable level using the power of evidence and the legal system and "believing in Santa" to help save Santa Claus. It sounds childish and dumb, but it makes for an awesome film overall.

I enjoy watching the Netflix series, House of Cards, with Kevin Spacey. I like it because of the fact that it shows the background deals of how the United States government is run.

My favorite show that is related to law is the Netflix show, Scandal. The main character, Olivia Pope, works at a crisis management firm in Washington D.C. She spends quite a bit of time at her former place of employment, the White House. I like the show because while it deals a lot with the law, the show finds a lot of ways to keep you more interested than you would be with a normal crime show.

Although I have many favorite movies related to law, as many movies fall into this category, my favorite has to be The People vs. Larry Flint. It is a remarkable movie that chronicles the struggle to uphold the freedom of speech.Flint is a representative and promoter of an extremely taboo and controversial industry that is threatened by censorship. Flint transforms his battle from that of his magazine right to publish, to making himself a hero and defender of free speech.

My favorite movie related to law, and one of my favorite movies of all time, is Law Abiding Citizen. I like it because there's so many twists to the plot and because it shows how corrupt the criminal justice system can be sometimes,

My favorite TV show related to the law would probably be House of Cards on Netflix. I don't know if politicians really toy around with creating law like it's a chess game, such as in this show, but as (hopefully) fiction it's interesting to see. It's kind of a scary thought to think of law being so corrupted by self-interest in the way it is in this show. Also, there's a huge issue with stepping on the first amendment rights of the press in this show. I can't stand the main character, and yet, I'm very fascinated by him.

My favorite show is Scandal. Not only does Olivia Pope has my dream job, but she also is always dealing with politics and went to law school.

My favorite law movie would have to be "12 Angry Men" not only because it showed how the justice system works but as a Comm Minor its a perfect argument and debate example. And a book that I'm reading now that pertains to Law is "China in Ten Words". It talks about the upheaval of China from the cultural Revolution and the time of Mao to where China is now and how the communist party works to erase the travials of their countries past from the public.

My favorite movie that has to do with the laaw is Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey. It was intense and twisted. I don't think lawyers in real life pay a biker gang to beat someone up, but wouldn't that be cool?! I also liked how it all tied together and for the most part, everything works out.

Although I wouldn't say it's my favorite book, I had to read a book called "The Nine" by Jeffrey Toobin in high school. This book was actually really interesting because it took you into the world of the Supreme Court and the nine justices who decide the most extreme and controversial court cases. We had to do an in depth research paper analyzing the cases in this book.

My favorite TV show regarding law is Scandal. The show revolves around crisis management lawyers who work in Washington D.C. Olivia Pope, the main character, also deals with campaigning for the president, which is something I would love to do.

I have two favorite movies pertaining to law. They include Legally Blonde and Liar Liar. Legally Blonde interests me because, Reese Witherspoon, takes a leap of faith by going to law school with the initial goal of getting back her boyfriend back but ends up finding out that she was meant to be in the field of law.
Liar Liar is also my favorite because humor is added when Jim Carey is unable to bend the truth in the courtroom because of his son's wish.
Olympia M. MW
My favorite law movie would have to be "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." It's super old school, but it's still relevant in terms of how egos and corruption can prevent laws from being passed. Also, it shows how media can be pressured by government influence.

I'll switch it up and reference a song. Any Johnny Cash fans out there? Let's talk about one of his most famous tunes Folsom Prison Blues, a song about heartless killing and shooting people "just to watch them die," that initiated Cash's political cause of choice to be prison reform. Cash started performing regularly in jails becoming a champion of the oppressed.

My favorite movie regarding law would have to be "To Kill a Mockingbird." Atticus stands up for what he truly believes is right even during a time of deep oppression and close-minded beliefs. He doesn't lose himself to the ways of the time, but rather sticks to his guns even though he has to deal with major tribulations for defending a black man in a rape case. When the entire town was against one man, Atticus did his job, abided by the law and sought justice for the voiceless.

MY COUSIN VINNY. I was born in New Jersey into a loud and obnoxious Italian-American family much like the characters in this movie. Growing up, it has always been a family favorite because we can relate to the world that they come from. And let's be real, it's absolutely hilarious. I love how this movie put a comedic twist on the US legal system and courtroom conduct.

Many years ago I read the book "Inherit the Wind," and I really enjoyed it. I also watched the movie "Twelve Angry Men," and that was great too, but I liked the topics discussed in the Scopes "monkey trial." I'm usually a big fan of debates between religious and secular parties. I think that, although biased at times, the American judicial system is awesome in that there is almost always a trial to settle a legal issue rather than having a "Judge Dredd" style system.
Legally Blonde would have to be my favorite "law movie." The movie provides you with an understanding of law school, cases and jurisdiction. It also provides some comedy and romance!
Brittany G. MW
I love "Law and Order" the TV show, specifically the Special Victims Unit series. I've never been into law that much but I like crime series and think forensics are interesting. I like this show because I like how you get to see the case from an outside perspective and you're able to follow it as the case is unfolding. There are a few episodes that leave viewers with open-ended questions and don't reveal the court decision in the case which is so unsettling but I like that it makes the viewers think for themselves and have their own opinions. There's always so many twists and surprises in the episodes it's very suspenseful.

One of my favorite shows that I recently started watching on Netflix is Scandal, with Kerry Washington A.K.A. Olivia Pope. She runs a crisis management firm in DC and is often involved with White House drama, which happens to be her former work place. My favorite movie related to law would have to be Erin Brockovich. This movie is so powerful and tells the story of a truly courageous woman who saw no boundaries when it came to pursuing justice. She saw people suffering and fought for what was right with so much conviction. Even though she overstepped her authority at the time, she created her own position within the firm. A remarkable true story- I definitely recommend!

My favorite movie related to law would definitely have to be the movie "Se7en." Though this movie is more of a thriller and crime movie, it still takes the law into account. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman play detectives who are on the hunt for a man that kills a person in a way that they have committed a crime from one of the seven deadly sins. Not only is the cast amazing, I love that it has historical and biblical references too.
My favorite book having to deal with law is "To Kill a Mockingbird". I read it when I was a freshman in high school and it has remained one of my favorite books. The law was different for races other than white and changed how people treated each other as a consequence. It's an interesting and wonderful book.

If I could choose, I would choose the movie A Scanner Darkly, which is based off the book of the same title by Philip K. Dick, who also wrote the book that the movie Bladerunner was based off of. Similar to George Orwells dystopian themes, in A Scanner Darkly, an undercover cop in a not-too-distant future becomes involved with a dangerous new drug and begins to lose his own identity as a result. **spoiler alert** It's what the government wanted to happen. This is not an obvious law related movie about a court case, writing an amazing speech, getting into law school, or the journey towards becoming the president, but an exploration of extreme consequences of government involvement and surveillence.
Also, Keanu Reeves with Robert Downey Jr, Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder. Win!

My favorite show that has to deal with law is Parks and Recreation. I love this show because the main character, Leslie does an excellent job of holding justin in her small town. She is for fairness and equality, freedom of speech and all practices. She takes the constitution and bill of rights very seriously and that is shown in each episode. From the show taking place in Pawnee to Washington DC I'v actually learned quite a bit about law and how the media (tv shows) must project it. Leslie is a great advocate of the show for human rights for all.
Danielle Cisneros
My favorite law show is law & order svu. It's interesting to see the process the detectives and DA's go through to out people on trial and persecute them.
Chris Chaney (M/W 3:30 p.m.)
I have already seen comments on both these series, but Parks and Recreation and House of Cards are two of my favorite tv series and they both pertain to law in some way or another. While House of Cards shows the corrupt side of the law and national politics, the comedy series Parks and Recreation features more city concern and litigation. Both are fantastic series though and I highly recommend either to my fellow classmates.
My favorite political show is House of Cards, a Netflix original drama starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. The writing is incredible as well as the performances. The show is about Spacey's character's rise to power through corruption and every episode leaves you shocked, mildly terrified, but definitely impressed.

Although the book and the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird" isn't really about law, I wanted to mention that it's been one of my favorite books for a long time. I first read it when I was a little girl and found it in the local library on a table. Movie-wise I enjoyed "Amazing Grace" and "Lincoln."

My favorite Law Movies are My Cousin Vinny and To Kill a Mockingbird. My parents are both lawyers so I've grown up watching these and I think they're interesting and entertaining examples of the judicial process.

One of my favorite books is John Adams by David McCullough, not only because he is one of my favorite presidents, but also how beautiful his romantic life with Abigail was. He was so passionate about our country, he did all he could to keep us from continuing on in war. He may have irritated many people with how opinionated he was, but he stuck to what he believed in and had a deep love for our country. I also appreciate his passion for books. He always read, which made him so knowledgable in law, social issues, and so much more.

I am a huge fan of documentaries, so I would have to say my favorite law related film is "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room". Although it is despicable what they did, at the same time it is scandalously entertaining. Blows my mind that those "guys" got away with it for so long.

My favorite law movies are Law Abiding Citizen and Legally Blonde. Law Abiding Citizen shows how a man takes things into his own hands to get justice for his family. Legally Blonde is a very fun movie but it also gives an overview of law school, cases, and jurisdiction.

I love a few comedy shows and movies that are related to law. Liar Liar has always been a favorite movie of mine, ever since I was a kid. It never fails to make me laugh. As far as TV shows go, Parks and Recreation is one of my favorite shows. The cast is amazing, and the writing makes something dull like the parks and recreations department hilarious!
My favorite book regarding legal issues is To Kill A Mockingbird. I think we all know the story line for the most part. Atticus Finch is a small-town attorney advocating on behalf of a black man, Tom Robinson, to rise above racism in Alabama where Tom is accused of rape. The book showcases the views of white America during this time and was published in 1960 during the beginning of the Civil Rights Acts where discrimination based on race, sex, color and national origin was beginning to see its end.

I absolutely love movies, so I cannot really pick which one is my favorite. So I will do a book instead.
My favorite book is The Giver by Lois Lowry. It is about a boy learning that he will hold all memories of everything, from good ones to terrible ones. In this book, this is rules and everything but people are only allowed to do certain things. Laws are taken away but people don't remember them. Though the young, Jonas, will become the giver and he is allowed to break the rules, laws. Sometimes you have to break rules in order to do the right thing.

One of my favorite Netflix shows is Parks and Rec. It shows a side of government most people aren't aware of in a humorous light while making strong points on the broken local government system. I do not follow law movies or tv shows very well, but I do like watching Law and Order. I used to watch it with my dad when I was younger, and every once in a while I will turn it if I notice it's playing. The law movie i have always loved, as corky as it sounds, is legally blonde. If you look past the pink and the fluff it is a movie about a girl who becomes empowered to do anything she set her mind to and after watching that movie (many moons ago) i knew i wanted to grow up and be the strong minded woman Elle Woods was.
The first song that immediately came to mind was "Cookie Jar," by Jack Johnson. This song pertains mostly to our society's lack of accountability when it comes to committing crimes. The influence of the media largely impacts the decisions we make, as a society, on whom to blame. Essentially, the song argues that everyone and every media outlet including television and radio is to blame for the crime committed in today's world. It's a good listen and encourage all to check it out.
My favorite show has to be House of Cards. Kevin Spacey just nails it as Frank Underwood! It's a show that's just so well thought out and in my opinion expresses and plays the political scene well. I love seeing how Washington works and how politicians strong-arm each other, and I've learned that favors are the currency in Washington.
I love the TV show "Life and Death Row" featured on National Geographic. It shows what life is like on death row, and shows capital punishment through the eyes of the people whose lives have been shaped by it. Each part of the three-part mini series focuses on a key aspect of the capital punishment system: execution, trial, and appeal. It's really cool!
The movie that I chose wouldn't be thought of as a "law" movie, but I chose Hunger Games because it shows how a corrupt government can completely control the people. Hunger Games made me very thankful that I do not live in a world like that.

Law and Order SVU.. This has to be one of my favorite shows. I will sit and watch reruns all day long until it goes off. I love forward to Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. I love it. I watch it so much my 2 year-old hums the music in the intro and almost knows the statement in the beginning. I can't say that I am into sex-crimes, though the show is interesting. From the cases, to the investigating, interrogating, the court scenes, the ADA. I just love it all.

I would have to say that one of my favorite books dealing with law is one of American literature's modern classics, To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee managed to publish an extraordinarily heartwarming book despite the fact that it deals with racial inequality and rape. To Kill a Mockingbird is just an amazing, entertaining book that explores these social and political woes with Atticus Finch leading the story with his heroic morality that "sets a model of integrity for lawyers".

One of my favorite movies is Amazing Grace. The film recounts how William Wilberforce, with the help of William Pitt, Thomas Clarkson and others, led the campaign against the British slave trade. During his campaign, Wilberforce becomes extremely unpopular in the House of Commons. But, with the support of his loved ones, he systematically weakens the slave trade to where it was finally abolished in 1807. I love how resilient and faithful Wilberforce was in the work that he believed God called him to.

I hope no one judges me by my answer but....Legally Blonde is one of my favorites. I saw it in the theaters when it first came out and immediately fell in love. I still quote it to this day. For those that don't know, the film is about a broken-hearted sorority girl, Elle Woods, who applies to law school to follow her ex-boyfriend to try to get him back. Along the way she realizes she's got a gift for practicing law. It's a silly movie, but one that I will always love.

When it comes to law-related movies, my favorite is Legally Blonde. Elle Woods beats the odds by proving she has what it takes to get into Harvard Law School and actually solve a case using the skills she had. She was doubted for being girly and represented a stereotype that did not mesh well with others who are also in law.

After reading the prompt, the first thing that popped into my head was "I Fought The Law" by the Clash. Even though it's not one of my favorite songs in the world, I do like the song and the fact that it is now stuck in my head made it impossible for me to think of any other song related to law so I'm going with it.
I love the film 'To Kill A Mockingbird' and the trial process that goes along with it. It really gives you a look at the segregation in the justice system at the time.

My favorite book having to do with the law would have to be that First Amendment book we read for the Common Experience... just kidding, that one was interesting but I actually really enjoy reading (and rereading) My Sister's Keeper. The movie touches on it, but the book really shows the entire court case and goes into depth on the discussion over genetic engineering and body-rights. I think this is definitely a growing topic in today's society.

I am obsessed with the tv series Sons of Anarchy and I enjoy watching how they are able to go around the law as they partake in illegal activity. It's fiction, I know, but it is interesting how they go around the system and end up outsmarting all of the governmental workers.

I absolutely love anything written by my favorite author, John Grisham. Before he became a well-known author, Grisham practiced criminal law for over a decade and served in the House of Representatives in Mississippi. I enjoy watching Suits. The series is about this guy who accidentally ends up becoming an associate at a law firm even though he never went to law school. The law firm deals with high profile cases so you can expect some heart-racing legal action all the time.
I'm not much of a law t.v/movie person, but if there were one show that I watch that deals a little bit with law, I'd have to say my favorite television series is called "The Have and Have Nots". Created by the famous Tyler Perry and airing on Oprah's network, OWN, the show is a modern day drama dealing with rich families and poor families who work for the government. It is definitely more of a drama series, but one of the main characters is running for governor, and the rest of the characters somehow all tie in to each other. It's definitely a must see.
My favorite book dealing with law is my favorite book of all time: 1984 by George Orwell. I've studied this book extensively, and I think it is a fascinating look at what a society under totalitarianism can become. I personally think that Orwell was right about almost everything except the date... But I won't get into that right now.

My favorite movie that I have seen recently is 'The Lincoln Lawyer' with Matthew McConaughey. He plays a defense lawyer who takes on a client who believes can beat the system. As the crime is reviewed McConaughey realizes many parallels between a previous case of his. Faced with many challenges McConaughey must choose to fight for the truth to protect his family and himself.
I rarely watch TV; therefore, if I had to pick a movie I enjoy that is associated with Law in a way, it would have to be Legally Blonde. Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is your sterotypical air headed blonde sorority girl who woke up one morning and said, "I wanna go to law school." She enrolled in Harvard Law to show a former ex-boyfriend that she is capable of being serious no matter how ditzy she may be. With a knack for law, Elle ends up proving everyone wrong and ends up becoming a badass lawyer winning her first court case. Although it may not be based off a true story, it still comes to show you can do anything you set your mind to.

My favorite show related to law would have to be Bates Motel. In the show, Norma and Norman run an Inn in a corrupt city. The police officers and all the politicians are involved in drug trade. Two of the main characters get involved in the politics of the black market and all hell breaks loose!
I've always enjoyed watching Law & Order SVU, but I love the strong sense of feminism that is displayed in Legally Blonde. To me, Elle Woods is the ideal woman inside of every female who faces the struggles of competing in the corporate world.

I am a sucker for "A Few Good Men." Directed by Rob Reiner in 1992. Funny thing about it, I was not even born yet! My father is retired Air Force and could quote every line in the movie. Now that I have grown up with it, I too can quote nearly every line. Neo military lawyer Kaffee (played by Tom Cruise) defends two Marines accused of murder; they contend they were just following orders. I won't give away the ending but Jack Nicholson gives a pretty memorable performance.

My favorite law-related movie is The People vs. Larry Flynt. A friend recommended it to me a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. Initially I didn't know anything about it, I just really like Woody Harrelson. If I had to pick anything, I would go with the T.V show Scandal. This show has opened my eyes in the basis of knowing that I am not fully protected by the government and how corrupt it can get. This show provides real-life political scandals. Olivia Pope protects the secrets and reputations of America's politicians, CEOs and public figures and guarding her own secrets. Makes me wonder if that is really how corrupt our government really is. That's just a thought and how it relates with laws left and right.

My favorite law movie would have to be Erin Brockovich. Yes, I'm a fan of Legally Blonde, but when you look deeper than the superficial blonde lawyer in one movie, you find a mom who, while trying to take care of her family, gets a job at a law firm to get back on her feet in the other. For those of you who have not seen this movie or if you have forgotten the details, Erin starts as legal assistant and almost single-handedly brings down a California power company accused of polluting a city's water supply. That's one strong and independent woman for you.

My favorite show dealing with law would have to be the Newsroom on HBO. It's a political drama that shows the behind-the-scenes activity of a cable news channel. It shows what goes into compiling information for the news stories they cover like getting a certain number of confirmed sources and stuff like that. Awesome show!
My favorite movie that has to do with the law would be, "The Firm" with Tom Cruise. The movie follows a young post-grad law student as he joins a prestigious law firm and he realizes that there are a lot of corrupt things he has to do in order to succeed. It is definitely a fast paced thriller!
Though it isn't the best example of following the law, Ides of March - a political thriller centered around two public affairs/relations practitioners - serves to demonstrate the need for ethics when mixing mass media and politics. Furthermore, it demonstrates the consequences of failing to uphold the law.

I like all the movies and TV shows mentioned! Scandal is one of my all time favorites because Olivia Pope bends so many rules and really pushes the limits of the law. Legally Blonde is hilarious and genius. I recently started watching Criminal Minds on Netlix. It's so good. Mainly it just deals with the FBI tracking down serial killers (and giving me nightmares). It's really interesting to see all the hoops they have to jump through to catch somebody. Between search warrants, probable cause, and arrests, it always keeps me on my toes.

My absolute favorite movie relating to law would have to be Liar Liar. This movie showed the typical person's view of a lawyer as a manipulative liar and Jim Carrey has to find a way to do good by his job and personal life without falling back on his old habit of lying his way out of situations. Hilarious way to show the lawyer's process.

I'm a regular NCIS and Law and Order watcher, but the TV show that I have been hooked on recently is Scandal. Oliva Pope is extremely motivational to me. She knows the law inside and out and pushes the limits.
One of my favorite tv series related to law is Law and Order SVU. While the stories can become over dramatized, I love to watch the relationship between the police and lawyers and how they handle a case together. There isn't always an immediate happy ending to these stories, sometimes not at all, but you get to see how just a shred of new information or the diligent work of the prosecution or defense can be just enough to determine a person's future.

My favorite tv series that relates to law is that from when I was younger. I loved to watch JAG with my dad everyday before school. It was about the military side of law. I don't remember all the details anymore, but I enjoyed it. It is about the elite legal wing of officers that prosecutes and defends those who may be involved in military-related crimes.

My favorite would have to be Legally Blonde. I think it's funny and I love how Elle wins her case because she knows about hair. This is the only law related movie I can think of...when I think of a law show, I think of the trials HLN has aired in the past...like Jodi Arias' trial and Martin MacNeill. HLN treated these cases like they were a TV series.

My favorite television show that relates to law is Law and Order: SVU. Even though it is fictional, I think it is interesting to see how the court cases happen and how passionate the detectives are to make sure justice is done. (I like to hope that many real life detectives and prosecutors feel the same about their jobs.)

Growing up I ALWAYS watched Law and Order (any version, but my favorite is with Sam Waterson). I love everything about the show: the crime, the trial, indictment, everything. It helped me understand laws and what not to do haha.

I don't really watch a lot of law/legal films, and I don't think anyone has mentioned this one, but Big Daddy :D Adam Sandler plays a law school graduate who basically "kidnaps" (even though he didn't see it that way) a kid who was left on his apartment doorstep. After growing a father/son bonding relationship, issues rise as social services find out he lied about the kid actually being his own son. I won't spoil the ending in case someone hasn't watched it, but definitely one of my favorite Adam Sandler films.

Personally I love the Netflix original series, House Of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey. Although the show is fiction, I do think it provides insight into the world of politics and the types of tactics that go into climbing up the ladder in today's government. In its two seasons the show has shed new light on and created an interest in the public eye. Even though the show is a drama, it shows how pulling a few strings and manipulating people can ultimately result in something similar.

My favorite TV show is Law and Order SVU. I've seen every episode some even more than once! The show made me familiar with some of the legal terms that are discussed in class. I didn't know binge watching the show would benefit me in any other way than how identify suspects in sex crimes.

My favorite book is To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee. I've read it three times in the past 10 years. I love Atticus Finch and his professionalism. I also love that he was committed to racial equality and decided to defend a black man charged with raping a white woman. The book is beautifully written and truly depicts the struggle for racial equality in America.

The first movie that comes to mind when thinking about the law is Double Jeopardy. I first saw it when I was 14 or 15 and I did not realize that double jeopardy existed until then but quickly found myself very interested in its concepts. I never thought about the fact that a person cannot be tried twice for the same thing but it is an important part of our justice system (and makes for a good movie plot, too.)

My favorite movie would have to be "Paradise Lost" and my favorite book would have to be "Life After Death" by Damien Echols. The movie is a documentary about the case in West Memphis, Arkansas about three teens who were convicted of murdering three young boys. One of the men convicted was named Damien Echols and he was sentenced to death. After 18 years the men were released on an Alford plea because there was virtually no evidence that connected them to the murders. The book "Life After Death" was written by Damien Echols after he was released from death row.

I enjoy the show Law and Order SVU- and that's about as far as I've gone into voluntarily watching shows that involve a lot of legal matters. I have seen Twelve Angry Men though, I watched it in 8th grade in my government class and I actually enjoyed that too. It must have left an impression if I still remember it.

One of my favorite movies is Legally Blonde. I can watch it over and over again. I love comedies and there actually is a lot of legal terminology in it.
I love watching TV shows and Law & Order has always been one of my favorites. Not only do I enjoy this show because crime is one of my favorite genres and it has obviously been very successful (20 seasons), but also I find it interesting that the plot usually deals with real cases that have made headlines in the past. It makes the show ten times better in my opinion.

One of my favorite books is "Anthem" by Ayn Rand. It takes place within the future in which a character finds a secret tunnel later revealed as a subway station. This character named Equality 7-2521 sneaks off to this tunnel to write about his views toward the socialization and lack of individuality within his society. It was very eye opening to read a scenario in which a government dictates how the citizens should think, act and express themselves.

One of my favorite shows related to law is Orange is the New Black on Netflix. The show features women in prison and follows the surprisingly complex lives they lead when they are "locked up." An intriguing aspect of the show is finding out how each of the characters got into prison, how long their sentence is and how they behave in that environment. The main character, Piper, was involved in an international drug ring and didn't serve time until years after when another person who had been involved named her. It is interesting that most of the women are not in prison for violent crimes. One of the characters was a nun and in prison from protesting a political ideology, they did not go into detail about her crime, but on the surface it sounds as if she was simply using her first amendment and freedom to express herself. With two seasons already on Netflix, and a ton of material left to cover, it is safe to say i am thrilled for the next season in June. Since it is an original Netflix series, they release all of the episodes at once, which leads to an all-day binge appropriately named "Orange is the New Black Out."

Most of the shows I watch related to the law are mostly on the ID channel. Like Dates from Hell, Blood Relatives, Deadly Women, etc. I do love Orange is the New Black on Netflix. It mixes in how corrupted the jail that they are in really is and is hilarious. However, I've recently started watching The Newsroom since it's my major and is all about media law when you think about it. It gives you an inside look on how the media needs to address things when it comes to the law. Whether it be head on, avoid controversy at all costs but, then again that wouldn't make good TV, now would it?

One of my favorite movies that includes Law and esspecially how the media handles it would be Ron Howard's film Frost/Nixon that deals with the resignation of Richard Nixon after the Watergate scandal and his interviews with TV personality David Frost.
I really like this movie not just for the performances, by Frank Langella (Nixon) and Michael Sheen (Frost), but because it's a really good example of the media being a watchdog over the goverment and holding politicians to the same standards they hold us to.
It's a really fantastic film, and I would recommend it to anyone if they haven't already seen it.

I love many of the shows/movies that are listed on here already (especially House of Cards and My Cousin Vinny!), however my favorite show is Criminal Minds. Aside from wishing I was the genius FBI technical analyst Penelope Garcia (with the hair of Agent Jareau), I'm fascinated by the process the FBI profilers go through to catch serial killers. It can be very bureaucratic and the agents sometimes have tip-toe across the line between what's Constitutional or not but I absolutely love the show.
My favorite Show that includes law is Scandal! The reason i love this show so much is because of the drama and the stories of the people she represents. I am obsessed and can't wait for it to return this Thursday.

Great show and i would recommend everybody watch it.

I haven't seen many movies about law, however I am a HUGE Law and Order SVU fan. But if I had to pick a movie that I really liked that was related to the law it would have to be Legally Blonde. Elle Woods is such a great role model and strong leader. Everyone underestimates her, but then she proves them wrong.

Late as ever, but I'm finally participating! My favorite show is The Good Wife. I'm also a huge fan of Scandal, but I feel like The Good Wife encompasses more of the law aspects so that viewers understand what and why a case is taking place. An episode can deal with charges of various kinds, subpoenas, jail time, court time and the like. Before watching The Good Wife regularly I was aware and understood most of the law terms taking place and that show does a good job of describing it, even if you aren't sure what something in particular is. After being in class and then watching more episodes of The Good Wife, I feel comfortable knowing the law terms presented on the show!

Better late than never right!! So I have two favorite movies to talk about here. One is Law Abiding Citizen and the other is Lincoln Lawyer. Both have a law base in them with enough twists and turns to keep you interested the whole time.
I like Law Abiding Citizen because it shows that the law can be corrupt and that the judicial system isn't always perfect. I don't necessarily agree with taking the law into your own hands, like the main character did but I do understand why he did the things he did. He had to take it to the extreme to show Jamie Fox (the lead lawyer) that fighting for what's right and for the truth is more important than ratings.
I liked the Lincoln Lawyer because it's about a lawyer who helps handle small law suits and deals with clients who may not have the income to afford him but help him out in other ways when he needs a favor. He gets set up by one of his big case clients and the whole movie is about putting the right guy in jail and making sure his name is cleared.
Conviction with Hillary Swank. Shows how hard work, dedication, and sibling love can prevail. This woman earns her law degree to help her wrongfully accused brother who has exhausted his chances to appeal his conviction through public defenders. Haven't seen 12 angry men; I've heard good things though.

A show I've gotten hooked on lately is "How To Get Away With Murder." I like the show because it shows law students and the process of cases. I like how it shows what it takes to win a case-rigorous studying, all-nighters,team work. I'm sure the show is not entirely accurate, but it's entertaining.
"Law-Abiding Citizen" is an awesome movie. Gerard Butler is the man. It shows how the criminal judicial system can be corrupt. People get away with murder, etc.

Touche Taylor. That movie is intense! When it comes to my favorite however I am a big fan of 3 but can claim no individual winner. 1. Absence of Malice- Paul Newman is part of an investigation that Sally Fields reports on and it pertains to individual rights to privacy and liable/slander. 2. My Cousin Vinny- This is a great comedy with Marisa Tomei and Jo Pesci. The quote on the cover reads "There have been many courtroom dramas that have glorified the Great American Legal System," on the top and "This is not one of them," on the bottom. Great stuff! 3. A Few Good Men- Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson battle in the military courts over charges of ordering hazing of new recruits in the military. There are many famous lines that are still quoted today including "you can't handle the truth," and some very intense courtroom scenes of the trial make this movie a classic legal drama.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" has always been a personal favorite of mine. It shows the brutality and hivemind of racism. I also love the way it shows how unjust the judicial system can be and how personal opinions can overshadow rational thought.

My favorite law related movie is a tie between "Lincoln Lawyer" with Matthew McConaughey and "Primal Fear" with Edward Norton and Richard Gere. I like both of those movies because of the twisted story lines they have. Most law or lawyer related movies keep you guessing what will happen until the very end and both of those movies did that for me. Matthew McConaughey was surprisingly a really good actor in "Lincoln Lawyer" as well. And of course, Edward Norton played the perfect part in his movie. I don't want to give away the ending but I hope you have seen it as well!

My favorite movie related to law would definitely have to be "My Cousin Vinny", because it made law interesting showing the process of the courtroom with a comedic twist. I'd have to say one of my favorite movies involving the law would probably be Catch Me If You Can. You never really see a courtroom or jury but you get a laugh at how Leonardo DiCaprio avoids and breaks the law continuously. It's also an even greater movie due to the fact it was based on true events.

One of my favorite TV shows is Bones. The show revolves around a team of forensics who's job is to solve murders. In some cases though they are faced with legal decisions and court cases where they must prove their arguments and their findings. Sometimes certain characters like Booth, and even Bones is faced with an ethical call where they feel the punishment should be harsher than what the law says. In the end the law keeps them in check and on the right track.

I am sure this shouldn't be legal, but I grew up watching lots of court TV shows, so, I'd have to say shows like "Judge Judy" are quite interesting. The cases are always ranging, and the people are absolutely strange, but I've seen many plaintiffs sue on the wrong premise or without factual evidence (example: Emotional Distress cases, negligence, damages, etc.)

The way city council meetings are portrayed is quite funny, but the my favorite moments of the show definitely have to do with media. It's very loosely related to law, but my favorite TV show that touches on the subject is "Parks and Recreation". It talks about local government, and takes place in the parks and recreation department following the character Leslie Knope and her coworkers as they work through everyday life. She holds office as a city councilwoman and makes plans to move to congress. It's a humorous show that makes local government seem much more glamorous than it is.

Although it is very loosely related to media law and is a political drama, I enjoy The Newsroom on HBO, which is about the behind the scenes at a fictional cable news channel. Although not extremely relevant to media law, they do encounter ethics issues which are a relevant part of media law! I would have to choose this because I don't watch too much TV! I am too busy studying for class! :)
Even though this movie is not entirely revolved around the teaching/facts of law, I have always enjoyed Legally Blonde and its sequel. This movie was my first taste of anything law related and I actually found myself paying more attention to the law topics/terms they discussed than I did the funny parts of the movie. Although this movie is not completely relevant to media law, it did incorporate topics/ethics that we have discussed in class. I like how they incorporated actual cases in the movie and used Elle to make it easy for us as viewers to understand.

My favorite movie related to law is probably one that many girls choose: Legally Blonde!
I can't remember how many times I've watched it, but what I do remember is how empowering it was. I first watched it because I love "chick flicks," however, the many times after were because of the message within the movie. Elle Woods, the star, is viewed as nothing more than a pretty sorority girl. A series of irrelevant events land her in Harvard Law school, and by the end she had surprised everyone there.
It is a story of a woman finding herself and realizing that she can truly do anything if she wants it enough.

In regards to the law, I believe my favorite movie would be SLC Punk. The movie is based on two "punk" post graduate best friends that try to live their life in an typical anarchy type of way. Sex, Drugs, and Punk Rock is what they believe in, not the law. Both friends studied and majored in law in college, so they feel very informed about how it works, but they believe the best way the world would be is without law at all. In the end of the movie, the main character realizes there's no way around the system, so he gives in, "joins the man," and becomes a lawyer.
