As the name of the blog suggests, I want you to use this forum to
speak freely about the topics that we will discuss in MC 4301 Mass Communication Law & Ethics.
We will discuss some controversial topics -- and often, we may not

A few ground rules, please. Some of our discussions may become
heated. While you have the right to express your opinion, I urge you to
be considerate of others, especially those with whom you disagree. Avoid
attacking or belittling someone just because you disagree with his or
her opinion. And, I suggest you double check your comment for grammar,
clarity and sensitivity before you post.
With your comment, please include your

need this information to keep track of your comments for participation points.
You can get an idea of how I used this blog in past semesters,
though you are not responsible for reading or commenting on previous
blog entries.
Now, let's start with something light.
Share with us a favorite book, movie, TV show, song, etc., that is related to law, then tell us why it's your favorite.
I'll go first. In past semesters, the movie I would call my favorite
is "Twelve Angry Men" -- the original with Henry Fonda. But in 2012,
I saw Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and was thoroughly impressed. The
movie recounts President Lincoln's effort to encourage Congress to pass
the Thirteen Amendment, which abolished slavery. A
movie about passing a constitutional amendment? How perfect for a media
law prof!
I look forward to reading your comments.

I haven't read or watched too many things that relates to law, but there is one movie I have seen that comes to mind. This movie is Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon and I absolutely love this movie! Reese Witherspoon plays a stereotypical sorority girl who wants to go to law school at Harvard. She only wants to go there to win her boyfriend back but finds out he is already engaged to someone else. Long story short Reese's character wins a huge murder case in the end and shocks everyone while in the process. She showed that if you work really hard at something (studying law) you can do anything.
I'm not really a political person, but if I had to choose it would be the song "Same Love" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. I love this song because it's about opening everyone's mind to the problems the LGBT community has to go through in America. For example how Gay Marriage is illegal in the United States as well as stereotypes provided by ignorant people and people that are eccentric with their religious beliefs. This song has led to politicians giving States the choice of allowing Gay Marriage and now it will hopefully be passed by the Supreme Court making it legal to marry someone of the same sex anywhere in the United States. I may not be into politics but I’m definitely a sucker for love stories and anyone should have the right to choose to be with their one true love no matter what which is what makes this song so inspirational and fun to sing to in the car.

A movie I recently watched this past year was Dead Man Walking, which was directed by Tim Robbins and starred Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon. I actually really, really liked the movie! It's about a Nun who befriends a prisoner on death row and establishes a personal relationship with him, while being his spiritual adviser. The film made me really take to heart and question whether or not the death penalty in America is a fair and just punishment. The film depicts the different ways people view an individual who is on death row, and the movie also addresses the negative stereotypes that people have about those on death row. Despite others opinions about capital punishment, this movie makes you really think, and it depicts the problems associated with the death penalty and tries to offer an alternate path--one you'll only understand if you watch the film!

Kristen Symmank (summer 1) My favorite movie that involves law would have to be Silence Of the Lambs! I liked how the main character got into the mind of a psycho to solve the case. I also like that is super creepy.

I started watching the show How to Get Away with Murder starring Viola Davis as the professor, not too long ago. Her object was to teach a law class how to get away with murder and the law part of the show interested me. I'm not sure why law is interesting to me because I find it difficult to understand most of the time. I like this show so far because it's captivating to see how much work is put into each case and what all has to happen in order to have a case win or to be heard for that matter. I'm not far into the show so my information on it is limited. I recommend this show if you are a person who doesn't like to expect what happens next. The drama is high and there's a little bit of violence as well. Hence the name of the show.

I was infatuated with Law Abiding Citizen. Not because a intellectual guy gets his revenge but it shows how in a court room that a high conviction rate of a lesser charge outweighs the chance of going to trial and the potential loss of the case all together. It had me thinking of why don't we go after a lot of these cases and just settle with a guarantee.

This past semester I was enrolled in a film class, which happened to cover a movie involving the death penalty. The film Dead Man Walking (1995) is a crime drama that follows the relationship between a man on death row and his nun mentor. This move explores the realities and struggles of both the guilty awaiting death and the victim’s family. It was definitely an interesting film that raised much debate within, as well as for the class, given its controversial topic.

Over the last few weeks, my girlfriend has gotten be hooked on an ABC show called scandal. This show, set in Washington D.C., is based around the corruption, dishonestly and of course scandal of American politics. It is based around a central character named Olivia, and her team attorneys. Their motive is to fix the problems, and scandals of our nations fictitious public figures. Through skewed legal doctrine and cut throat determination her and her team are "gladiators in suits." I enjoy this show for the fact that is a great drama and her job is virtually spin coverage, as a PR student I will have to learn, and be good a this aspect of PR. While she takes it to the extreme I have to applaud her for her quick action and unwavering confidence. I hope I never have to deal with some of her issues, but I just hope I'm ready to react like her should they arise.

My favorite film relating to law as of lately would have to be this documentary on Netflix entitled The Culture High(2014). This film directed by Brett Harvey is one of the best marijuana documentary films that explains both sides to the debate as well as exploring the hypocrisy of American Politics that have kept it illegal. The film has plentiful insights into the war on drugs as well as well as our society as a whole.

One of my favorite films that relates to law is My Cousin Vinny. The story is about a two New Jersey youths taking a road trip through the USA when they are wrongfully accused of robbery and murder. Ralph Macchio's character then has to have his cousin Vinny (a guy who took six attempts to pass the bar) to defend him. The movie has a great cast, lots of comedy, and an interesting depiction of trial strategy.

Hello Class,
My name is Elysia C. (Summer 1), so of course the best movie related to law is American History X. How could you not love this movie? It's raw, and grabs your attention. Very good direction. If you haven't seen it I suggest you do so (insert A Ok hand signal emoji here).
I'm a sucker for Connor Oburst, so naturally Desaparecidos song The Happiest Place on Earth is good. It's a bit cynical, but makes you think about corruption in America.

My favorite television show that relates to law would include Law & Order: SVU. I have always been interested in tv shows such as House and Forensic Files, but this has had my attention the most. Most people think that these types of shows are solely figuring out "who murdered who", but this show brings in law very well. I have actually learned from watching this show, although it is scripted.

My favorite documentary that is related to law is "Children of Giant." The documentary focuses on the 1956 feature film Giant in where Mexican-Americans were realistically depicted in the South. It also focuses on the racial barriers that Marfa, TX dealt with in the shooting of the film. The documentary mentions the Hernandez v. Texas Supreme Court Case in where Mexican Americans have equal protection under the 14th amendment. It was so interesting watching and learning that Mexican-Americans were also treated as second class citizens; although, being technically white in race.

One movie I really like that incorporated the law in it was Flight with Denzel Washington. Washington's character is a pilot who is addicted to drugs and miraculously crash lands a plane after an equipment failure. Only thing is, he lies to the court about being drunk while flying the plane, which is obviously illegal. He battles to keep up his charade of lying under oath time and time again until he finally confesses during a court hearing at the end of the movie.

I just recently signed up for Netflix and my favorite show that somewhat has to do with the Law is Daredevil. I'm a huge comic fan. I learned to read from my fathers old comics when he was a boy. You can currently view season one, and Netflix renewed Daredevil for a second season to premiere in 2016. Matt Murdock (Daredevil) is a lawyer-by-day and crime physical fighter at night. The Daredevil has to use his physical strength and the law to prevent the rise of crime lord Wilson Fisk. I don't really watch a lot of shows involving the law, but there's a fair amount in Daredevil and a whole lot of action to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

I've never really watched any shows or movies that have to do much with law. But this summer I've really gotten into Daredevil and Scandal, which are both on Netflix. In Daredevil, Matt Murdock is a blind lawyer who gets his first case in the first episode, so he's new to it all. And he's also a hero by night that fights crimes around the city. Scandal is another show I've gotten into and it's about a Washington D.C. lawyer named Olivia Pope and it chronicles her cases as well as her affair with the President of the United States... Pretty addicting stuff, but then again anything written by Shonda Rhimes seems to be.

I am not much of a political person, but one book I thoroughly enjoyed reading was To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book is not only an American classic but it stands up for African Americans in a court system. A white Lawyer named Atticus Finch takes on a case where a black man allegedly rapes a white woman. The time period is set back in the 50's and takes place in a small southern town where racial segregation is very dominant in their society. Atticus Finch decides to defend the man and eventually proves him innocent, despite all of the struggles, negativity, and threats thrown his way. The entire trial was definitely a nail biter, and definitely worth reading until the end. It made me interested in law because Atticus Finch was the only man who believed he was innocent, and gave the man the justice he rightly deserved.
One movie that made me really interested in law was (I'm going to be that girl) Legally Blonde. It really introduced me to the order on how things work when dealing with cases. Like the introduction of the case, questioning the family face to face, and the proceeding with the formality of bringing it all to a judge. I also love how it sends a positive message to women that they really can be anything they want to be...even if it's just to get back at your ex-boyfriend.

One of my favorite books, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, can be viewed in many aspects including political. A group of boys are stranded on an island and there is complete chaos without laws. One boy, Ralph, has been elected as leader to reduce the chaos and create a democracy while another boy, Jack, wants a dictatorship with him as the leader.

My favorite movie relating to law would have to be, "Law Abiding Citizen." A movie about a man (Gerard Butler) who witnesses the murder of his wife and daughter in his own home by intruders. Having to live with these memories for the rest of his life, Gerard takes the men to court, where they are set free with minimal charges and not murder charges. Gerard then sets out to get revenge on the men, and also his lawyer, who was no help to him. I like this movie because it shows the corrupted side of the law.

I don't even know where to start with a favorite, but I think one of the first movies that involved law that I remembered I loved the first time I saw it was "A Time to Kill." This movie, which I'm sure most have seen, is set in Mississippi and is about a little girl who African American who is raped and then left her for dead by two white men who were also members of the KKK. The two men also tried to hang her. Her father so distraught by the incident, he goes to court for the mens' hearing and shoots them dead in the courthouse. The rest of the movie the father's lawyer tries to prove his innocence in a county where racism is still prevalent and where his client could possibly not be tried fairly because he is African American. He uses this in his closing arguments when he ask the jury close their eyes while he vividly describes the rape, beating and attemped hanging of the littler girl. He then tells the jury to now imagine the little girl is white. His defense is that, had the little girls father been white, the murders of the rapist would have been justified. He also the argument that if they are willing to save the life of a white man who commits this murder out of vengeance, then they must also save the life of a black man as well. The lawyer uses precedence to convince the court that the father is innocent. In the end the father is found not guilty.

Hmmmm, favorites.... My favorite TV show is Bones. During the entire 10 seasons, the characters of the show try to bring justice to those who have committed murders through science.

I know today in class we were talking about double jeopardy. There's actually a movie called double jeopardy. It came out in 1999. It has Tommy Lee Jones and Ashley Judd. This movie definitely reminded me of what we were talking about since a woman is framed for her husband's murder. Down the line, she suspects that her husband is alive. So, if she finds and kills him she can't be re-prosecuted if she does end up killing him.
"A Few Good Men" is one of my favorite movies. "you can't handle the truth!". It is a movie about Tom Cruise who is a military lawyer in a murder case. Where two marines who are accused of killing a soldier. After much time they are finally found not guilty of the murders but they were dishonorably discharged from the marines.

I am a big fan of many shows that have to do with law. I watch Criminal Minds, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder each week as the new episodes airs. Each show is different while still discussing the different laws that come into affect and are broken. Though they are just TV shows, I find them very interesting and they have made me want to learn more about the law and government and how it comes into play in our everyday life. One of my favorite movies that has to do with law would be "Lincoln." Abraham Lincoln has always been one of my favorite presidents for many different reasons. This movie discusses the 13th Amendment and shows President Lincolln working with Congress to abolish slavery. It displays law as it was back in those times and it was very interesting to watch that movie and then compare it with the movies and shows we see today that portray the law.
One movie I enjoyed watching and learning about was Erin Brockovich. This movie is based on the true story of Hinkley groundwater contamination that was investigated by Erin Brockovich (played by Julia Roberts in the movie). This is a great legal movie as it demonstrated law and ethics in a civil case. The company Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) arbitrated damages to keep from ruening its image and reputation. Ethics is shown as to how the company poorly handled informing the citizens about the water supply which caused health issues for many individuals ,and negligence is show. This movie is a great reference to find example of Law and ethics, and its awesome to see how one individual can voice and gain the power to get justice for those who have no voice or power. The legal system is complex, but very interesting to learn and comprehend.
Looking forward to learning more this summer!

My favorite TV shows related to law definitely has to be Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder. The leading character, Olivia Pope, played by Kerry Washington in simply impeccable. There is always some sort of loophole that keeps the viewer entertained and full of suspense. Pope was a fixer for the white house president, but now has her own law firm, Pope & Associates where she helps her own clients. In How To Get Away With Murder, it involves a group of eager law students and their intelligent criminal defense professor who become involved in a twisted murder plot that promises to change the course of their lives. In my opinion there is nothing better on TV right now than these two shows.

I was told by a friend to watch a show called "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst" on HBO. It is a documentary put together by a writer named Andrew Jarecki. There is a movie called All Good Things (Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst) also written by Jarecki which was based off of the life of Robert Durst. Durst has been through multiple trials for murder and was accused of murdering his ex wife Kathie Durst. She went missing in the 80's. After her disappearance he was involved in two more murders. One in Galveston, Texas where he dismembered a man and another where he shot a long-time friend in the head in her home. So far he has not been found guilty for any of the murders, although it is pretty clear he is a psycho and actually did murder them all. Jarecki filmed All Good Things and Robert Durst actually watched it and called and agreed to be interviewed by Jarecki. The documentary follows the interview process and shows a few trials and it is insane to see what a ton of money can do to prove a guilty man innocent. Anyways, Jarecki basically gets Durst on recording while he is talking to himself in a bathroom saying he killed them all. Durst has STILL not been convicted which makes me question the court system sometimes. It's a must-watch!
A law-related movie I remember watching was "The Lincoln Lawyer." Although I have no interest in law, the plot twists and the method in which Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) conducts his business was entertaining. Although it has been quite some time since I have seen the movie, I only initially considered watching it because of the actual Lincoln Town Car. I thought it would have the same presence in the movie as Denzel Washington's Monte Carlo did in "Training Day." That was also a great movie that is somewhat related to law.

I watched the show True Detective which is about two detectives working a murder case together. They are trying to find the person responsible and bring them to justice. There is so much mystery during the entire season, and they have to put clues and pieces of information together in order to figure out who the murderer is. It delves into what is the right and wrong way of practicing the law. I don't want to give anything away, so that's all I'll say! :) I highly recommend it!

I have seen the movie "Legally Blonde 2" which is about character Elle Woods travels to Washington to join the staff of a congresswoman in able to pass a bill to abolish animal testing. Elle wants her dog Bruiser to reunite with his mother for her wedding, however she discovers her dog's mother's owner is a cosmetic company with animal testing. In the end, the people vote in favor of Bruiser's Bill and animals were soon released by all cosmetic companies including Bruiser's mom. This would be my favorite movie because I love how Elle gave a voice to those that can't speak and changed the law.

Currently, my favorite television series is Bones. It is a show about a forensic anthropologist who works with an FBI agent to solve murders. I am a freak about investigation shows. Justice Network is a new channel that is on the basic local channels my television has. It has cases anywhere from civil, criminal, forensics and more. A favorite of mine is Bait Car. This show is about a bait cars left in high theft communities. The undercover police officers have to be cautious about how to arrest someone for theft. A suspect can get in and out of the bait car without being arrested. The officers have to assure that the suspect is driving the vehicle for at least a few blocks to be able to make an arrest. Sometimes all it takes is for the suspect to say that they are taking it to a "chop shop" and officers can make an immediate arrest. Interesting how laws work. What's even more interesting is when the suspect has been recorded the entire time and during their arrest they still claim to be innocent. Great show for laughs!
I love watching Castle, it has the best of both worlds, laughter and murder. This show is about a NYPD detective and a murder mystery writer who work together to solve murders and make sure they find the bad guy, which brings law into the show. Although the law isn't too big about the show it still is super intriguing for me to watch and try to figure out who did and what will happen to them next. And makes this class more interesting helping me figure out what will happen to the bad guys in the show!

One of my favorite movies about law has to be the movie Bernie. The movie is based on the true story of Bernie Tiede, played by Jack Black, who murdered his 81-year-old millionaire companion Marjorie Nugent. The crime took place in the small east Texas town of Carthage. In this small town Bernie was so well liked by everyone that the prosecution had to request a change of venue in order to secure a fair trial. I really liked this movie because of its use of black humor and the interviews of townsfolk who knew Bernie.

My favorite law show is a Korean drama called "Three Days". It deals with an assassination attempt of the president but in the midst of investigating, a detective finds out the president was involved in an illegal plot with North Korea and another foreign country back in the 90's. The president resigned from the plan but another party still wanted to go through it and killed everyone who either found out or got in the way. Watch it! :)
So I don't find myself watching law movies. I more or less watch law shows. I enjoy the criminal investigations of Bones, and Castle. I realize these are more forensic shows but still have hints of law in the background. However I do enjoy one law movie very well, but again you could argue it's not law, but it is Legally Blonde. Say what you will but its an inspirational movie and there are law tones.
One of my favorite movies dealing sort of with the law is 'A Time To Kill'. It stars Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L. Jackson, with Matthew playing as Samuel's attorney in the trial of killing the man who raped his ten-year-old daughter, Tanya. It's my favorite because it digs deep into how unconstitutional the law was towards African Americans in the south and how despite the severity of a crime, color (race) was the calling card. His daughter was raped by a Klan member who got off scott-free because of his affiliation with the Klan (some of the law enforcement were a part of the Klan) and Samuel's character killed him right after the trial was over. Samuel's character had to go to trial and see if he should be convicted for murder. Matthew's character pretty much saves the day by explaining what happened to little Tanya but adds one powerful line of a monologue that shaped the movie: "Now imagine if she was white." To me, this movie bends towards the 14th amendment in treating everyone equally despite race, sex, origin, etc. This one line helped Samuel's character win the case.

I haven't watched to many movies relating to law, but one movie that comes to mind would be The Lincoln Lawer with Matthew McConaughey, he represents a man who is accused of murder, in a plot twist Matthew and the criminal go back and forth in a amazing plot twist that keeps you guessing what will happen next through out the whole movie
The last book I read was The Count of Monte Cristo. One of the last movies watched was The Shawshank Redemption. Both pieces of work are an example of the lack of a proper justice system. Both main characters face wrongful imprisonment and escape from jail. Had the justice system been in place and well-regulated, both men would have never found themselves in their particular situation. The responsibility is on everyone to ensure that such lapses occur as little as possible in real life.

One of my favorite law movies is definitely Lincoln. I have always like Lincoln as a person in history and even dressed up as Lincoln in grade school for extra credit in history. He was strong and was President in such a momentous time in history. Many of his decisions led to the ending of slavery. My favorite book related to law would have to be "To Kill a Mockingbird." This was one of the first books I had ever read that sincerely drove me into the novel. The dialogue, as well as the plot, flowed in a way where I could read it in just a few sittings. I also like the fact that Atticus took on a case that he knew would end up giving him a high amount of ridicule, although he knew what he was doing was right.

While I have recently fallen behind and have missed quite a few episodes, one of my absolute favorite shows, that just happens to also related to law, is the new How to Get Away with Murder show starring the incredible Viola Davis. The show is not only interesting because of the side stories that take place, but it also allows you to see the struggle that comes with being a law student as well as working in a court room with high profile cases and lawyers. While the suspense of figuring out the plot has been what keeps me coming back, the knowledge of the law I continue to gain from the show is what lessens the guilt of indulging in hours of television.

One of my most recent favorite law-related television shows would have to be The Good Wife. While it's certainly dramatized for the screen, it depicts several savvy lawyers winning (and losing) as they battle their way to the top of the Chicago legal scene. The show follows a main character, Alicia Florrick, and her family but every episode features a new case, so you have an overarching plot combined with an episodic aspect. Plus, each character's alignment and legal practices address interesting ethical questions, illustrating just how slippery that slope can be!
One of my favorite movies that relates to law is Big Eyes. Although it is a fairly new movie, I find the story of Margaret and Walter Keane to be very interesting. If you're unfamiliar with the story, Margaret was a painter who met Walter in the late 1950s. The two got married and after a turn of events, Walter began taking credit for Margaret's paintings and claiming them as his. "His" art blew up and he became a family name, leaving Margaret, the true artist, in the dark. There is definitely some law involved with this story and it is very interesting to watch it all unfold.

It is hard to choose. I can agree with a lot of my classmates here. Law Abiding Citizen, Law and Order SVU and even To Kill a Mockingbird. However my favorite is the tv show House of Cards. Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) is the U.S Majority Whip and he, consequently, will do anything necessary to gain power. It is a psuedo-behind-the-scenes look at how things work and how laws get passed. Although it is dramatized, it does a great job at representing the relationship between the press and politicians. Definitely a good watch.
