Welcome, Fall 2024 classes!

Welcome to my Media Law blog. I use this blog as a teaching tool that allows me to comment on current events and topics related to media law. It also allows you to participate in discussions involving media law topics.

As the name of the blog suggests, I want you to use this forum to speak freely about the topics that we will discuss during the semester.

We will discuss some controversial topics -- and often, we may not agree. You may not agree with me, or you may not agree with your classmates.

But this is a forum of expression, so you have the right to express your opinion. My opinion is not correct just because I'm the instructor. You should feel free to disagree with me.

Think about this as the First Amendment in practice.

A few ground rules, please. Some of our discussions may become heated. While you have the right to express your opinion, I urge you to be considerate of others, especially those with whom you disagree. Avoid attacking or belittling others just because you disagree with their opinions. And, I suggest you double check your comment for grammar, clarity and sensitivity before you post.

With your comment, please include your first name and the initial of your last name, and your class (11 a.m. class, 3:30 p.m. class, or Online class). I need this information to keep track of your comments for participation points.

You can get an idea of how I used this blog in past semesters, though you are not responsible for reading or commenting on previous blog entries.

Now, let's start with something light.

Share with us a favorite book, movie, TV show, song, etc., that is related to law, then tell us why it's your favorite and include a brief summary of the work.

I'll go first. In past semesters, the movie I would call my favorite was "Twelve Angry Men" -- the original with Henry Fonda. But in 2012, I saw Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and was thoroughly impressed. The movie recounts President Lincoln's effort to encourage Congress to pass the Thirteen Amendment, which abolished slavery. A movie about passing a constitutional amendment? How perfect for a media law prof!

I look forward to reading your comments.

hello! my name is Danielle A., I am in the monday/wednesday 11am class. my favorite tv show related to law is Law and Order: SVU. it is of course a specific area of the law, but it's about a criminal justice system specifically for special victims, their main job being apart of helping sexual assault victims. there are so many different episodes that don't always apply to the sexual assault victims, but it's always so interesting how they go into trial and before they go to trial to help the victim get justice. sometimes some episodes don't even show the trial, which always feels like a cliff hanger because those episodes are just too good not to show a trial!!! this show is so addictive, i've rewatched it 4 times now and i always find it so interesting how one of the main characters, olivia benson, fights and fights so that the victim gets justice, even if it means getting herself into trouble with the law.

I haven't seen any serious shows that are related to the law however, the movie "The Other Guys" with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg is one of my favorite movies that's related to law. The movie satirizes the clichés of police work, highlighting the absurdities and challenges that come with being a detective. It also touches on themes of bureaucracy and the sometimes misguided nature of law enforcement priorities.

Hi, my name is Jake Perdue and I'm in the 3:30 class of Media Law. One of my favorites movies that comes to mind relating to law would have to be The Green Mile, which is about a wrongfully convicted man that is sentenced to death. He cannot properly express his story in court and ends up being found guilty for a gruesome crime that he had no part in. It's one of my all-time favorites, an old classic.

Hello! my name is Ricky Landis and I am in the 11am class. I don't necessarily have a favorite TV show that relates to law, but I enjoy watching criminal interrogations on YouTube. A specific channel that comes to mind is JCS Criminal Psychology. There is a narrator that explains background details and context to add to the video, and also chimes in to explain when interrogators are using a specific method to extract information.

Hi, I'm Hanna P from the Online Class. I recently saw the new stage production of To Kill a Mockingbird on tour last spring, and it was life changing, honestly. I had always loved the book and movie but something about the live production and the way they portrayed the main character, Scout, who witnesses her father fight a legal battle over race in their small town was just so beautiful on stage. Left me with chills. Really shows how our legal system can sometimes be corrupted and how our rights show through this piece.

Hi, my name is Almalleli Nava-Romero, I'm in the M/W 11 am class. One of my favorite memoirs "Worries Don't Cry" by Melba Pattillo Beals follows her experience as one of the little rock nine. Her memoir takes place years after the Supreme Court ruling Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas which ended segregation in public schools. She was one of the 9 black students who integrated into what use to be an all white school. You follow her journey through this moment in her teenage years. This book is a must read and it's a book that everyone should read.

One of my personal favorite TV shows of all time is the Breaking Bad “spin-off” show, Better Call Saul. I absolutely love Jimmy McGill aka Slippin’ Jimmy/ Saul Goodman, his character is hands-down the best, worst lawyer OF ALL TIME!

For those of you unaware, Better Call Saul follows Jimmy McGill, a small-time New Mexico lawyer, hustling to make a name for himself. As he navigates personal and professional challenges, we see his transformation into Saul Goodman; the morally flexible lawyer from the hit-series, Breaking Bad. BCS explores themes of ambition, ethics, and the consequences of choices, all set against the backdrop of the legal and criminal worlds of Albuquerque.

Hi there! My name is Sarah K. (Online Class) I love all types of crime/law TV shows but the one that takes the cake is NCIS. I never had any personal connections with anyone in the military and watching this taught me so much about the different branches and roles. NCIS stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the show is constantly doing investigations on different crimes, such as murders and robberies, that involve military personnel.

My name is Nasira G i’m in 11 am class that’s on Monday/Wednesday and my favorite TV show that is related to law would have to be Chicago PD and this is my favorite because I can watch every season and still be intrigued by every episode on each season. I enjoy how the team investigates different criminal activities whether it has to do with within the team itself or not.

Hello! My name is Malyn Barnes and I am in the online class. My favorite “law” movie has to be Legally Blonde. I know its not accurate at all but it really inspired me to pursue my education and not care about what others think. The main character, Elle Woods, goes from a preppy sorority girl to law major shocking both her ex and peers. She perseveres and wins a court case (and doesnt end up with her ex. Which is a total win!).
